Scully: Late Pick 4 play at Prairie Meadows on July 8

July 7th, 2022

Friday’s Late Pick 4 at Prairie Meadows includes three stakes, and I’ll take a swing at the sequence on a reasonable budget.

Let’s examine the races.

Race 7: Saylorville S. (9:40 p.m. ET)

#7 Joyful Cadence will be a deserving favorite following a close second to Sconsin in the Winning Colors (G3) at Churchill Downs, but the four-year-old filly hasn’t been the most consistent performer, dropping multiple starts as the favorite earlier this season. I’ll use her with the other speed, in-form #2 Clickbait, and add late-running #1 Becca’s Rocket to the ticket.

Race 8: Iowa Distaff S. (10:09 p.m. ET)

A good second versus allowance rivals last time, #1 Misty Veil looms as a serious wire-to-wire contender from her inside post. #7 Oliviaofthedesert, perfect from a pair of stakes at Prairie, will make her third start off the layoff for Kenny McPeek and may have ample speed up front for her late kick.

Race 9: Iowa Sprint S. (10:38 p.m. ET)

The pace promises to be hot in the six-furlong race, as #1 Minister of Soul, #2 Top Gunner, and #4 Oil Money are ultra-quick in the opening stages of their respective races, and #7 Macron will take advantage.

He didn’t fire his best effort last time, the Speightstown Sprint at Lone Star Park, but the four-year-old gelding is more than capable of being competitive at this level. I liked his finishing kick at Oaklawn Park, recording a pair of allowance wins, and he was hurt by a slow start when third two starts back. Macron drew well in post 7 for Steve Asmussen, and I’ll single the stalker in his second stakes attempt.

Race 10: maiden special weight (11:04 p.m. ET)

The nine-horse field lacks a standout, and I’ll root for a price while using all.

  • 50-cent Pick 4: 1, 2, 7 with 1, 7 with 7 with all ($27)
