Scully’s signature plays for May 25

Happy Memorial Day! Ten races will be offered at Churchill Downs, and I will incorporate the following in my wagering:

Look forward to betting: #1 By Your Side (5-1 morning line) in race 8. Ran well when making his debut at Churchill Downs, rallying determinedly to edge subsequent Grade 1 winner Basin, and By Your Side followed with a convincing win in the 6-furlong Sanford (G3). The Constitution colt looks like a confirmed sprinter for Eddie Kenneally, faltering when trying two turns in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) last fall, and By Your Side should receive a favorable setup in this speed-laden field. His odds won’t be too short against Echo Town and others, and By Your Side appears to be training forwardly (half-mile work in :46 3/5 at Churchill) for the cutback to 6-furlongs.

Favorite I’m against: Evil Lyn (8-5) race 6. Sophomore filly enters 2-for-2 on turf, but Evil Lyn dropped down to the $30,000 claiming level against a pair of suspect conditioned fields at Fair Grounds. Given her affinity for sprint/middle distances, she faces a tricky stretch out to 1 1/8 miles for Brad Cox.

Live longshot: #11 Tidal Effect (10-1) in race 4. After going off form last fall, Tidal Effect performed better over Turfway’s synthetic track during the winter/early spring. The gelding drops to his lowest level yet in this spot and with little pace in the 12-horse field, Tidal Effect should be forward from the start with Gerardo Corrales, who is off to a fast start at Churchill (6-2-2-1). The Bill Morey trainee is eligible to outrun his early odds.
