Servis pair take on Wonder Gadot in Demoiselle Stakes

Promising fillies Daisy and Maurer Power give trainer John Servis a strong hand in the Demoiselle Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct Dec. 2.
Daisy (Blame) and Maurer Power (Violence) both come into the race unbeaten in two starts. Daisy’s resume is the stronger one, as she won the Tempted Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct in early November, leading most of the way and drawing clear in the stretch.
Maurer Power won her maiden at Delaware Park, and she then stepped up in style at a Parx Racing allowance Oct. 21, finishing strongly to win by 1 ½ lengths.
The strongest challenge to the Servis pair in the Demoiselle, a race which carries a 10-4-2-1 points split in the Road to the Kentucky Oaks series, is likely to come from the Mark Casse-trained filly Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d’Oro).
Wonder Gadot began her career in Canada, winning her debut in a Woodbine turf allowance Aug. 26. She then finished third in the Natalma Stakes (G1), also on turf, before switching to the all-weather at Woodbine to take out the Mazarine Stakes (G3) by six lengths.
That was enough to convince Casse to try a serious step up in class, to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). She performed creditably in her first start on dirt, finishing sixth despite being checked with an eighth of a mile to run. This will be a much less difficult task.
Also with stakes experience is Indy Union, though it was more of a learning experience as she finished eighth of nine in the Miss Grillo Stakes (G3) after being bumped at the start. She put that behind her well with a seven-length victory in a Belmont Park allowance Oct. 26.
Held Accountable has performed well in New York-bred stakes races, winning the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes and finishing second to Berning Rose in the Maid of the Mist Stakes on Empire Showcase day Oct. 21. This will be a tougher test.
Layla Noor is worth a look; she won at Laurel Park in a race switched from dirt to turf Nov. 10 despite stumbling at the start. She finished fourth in the Jessamine Stakes (G3) on turf at her previous start to subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) winner Rushing Fall. Oct. 29 Parx maiden winner Vindictive Ways and Oct. 5 Delaware Park maiden victor Stakes On a Plane complete the field.
