Shapiro's take on Sunday's mandatory Rainbow 6

If no one connects for a lone winning combination in the Rainbow 6 on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the jackpot pool, which is close to $1.2 million, will carry over to a mandatory payout day on Sunday afternoon.

Race 6:

There looks to be plenty of fillies and mares that do their best running on or near the front end in this optional claimer over the sod making #3 Bareeqa a deserving 9-5-morning line favorite. The late running daughter of Girolamo comes off a victory in the Mary Todd Stakes in February and has won 4 of 9 over this turf course. If Luis Saez can avoid traffic issues she should beat this bunch.

#5 Scatnap sped to the lead from her outside post against better on Florida Derby Day, but was run down late. With a better draw on Sunday, I would expect jockey Hector Berrios to sit off the pace, make his move on the far turn, and hope to have enough late to hold off Bareeqa. I will include the 7-year-old mare, as well as #1 Dance Till Dawn who has won 4 of 7 over this course and draws favorably to the inside after a game runner-up finish versus lesser. The 10-1 price is attractive.

Race 7:

A number of the competitors in this open $8,000 claimer exit a race at the same level on Mar. 29. On paper that event may look similar to this one, but the contest last month was much stronger. #4 Brookes All Mine battled along the inside with the eventual victor that day and held on for second. The 7-year-old mare should be fast enough to make the lead in this spot. If she gets away with a moderate early tempo she will be tough to beat.

I will also include #9 Put Position on the surface switch from turf-to-dirt for trainer Scott Becker. The Illinois-bred should sit a perfect stalking trip from her outside post on the cutback to one turn.

Race 8:

This high-level optional claimer for 3-year-olds goes through the Todd Pletcher duo of #4 Mystic Lancelot and #5 No Word.

Mystic Lancelot sat just off a brisk early pace in his first start of the form cycle on Mar 27, but did not have enough late to hold off the top two finishers. No Word has not been seen since a fifth-place effort in the Pilgrim (G3) last September at Belmont Park. The Silent Name colt was very impressive in his maiden breaking effort at Saratoga and comes in off a long series of drills at Palm Beach Downs. Both are obvious contenders.

I also give a big look to #8 Patrol. The $350,000 Keeneland April 2019 purchase won impressively on debut at Aqueduct on Feb 1. The son of Liam’s Map is out of a Greatness mare that earned over $463,000 on the grass. The Mark Casse trainee has a big shot to take a move forward on the move to the lawn. I love his upside.

Race 9:

There is not much early zip entered in this one-turn mile event over the main track, so I will lean on two runners that should be prominently placed and offer some value based on the morning line.

#7 Blakey should be able to make an easy lead on the class hike for trainer Michael DePaulo. The 5-year-old gelding has a win and second in four tries over the Gulfstream dirt and could sneak away from this group with Luis Saez aboard. #6 Dexter Road should find himself closer than normal given the lack of speed signed on. The nine-time winner has not won this year, but has hit the board in three straight going eight panels at Gulfstream Park.

Race 10:

I love the chances of #3 All Quality in this two-turn event over the green. The daughter of Quality Road drew the far outside in her first race in five months for trainer Mark Casse forcing jockey Edgard Zayas to drop to the back and make one big run. The $240,000 OBS June 2018 purchase was loaded when they turned for home, but lacked room and was forced to steady late. With an inside draw and the race under her belt in 2020 she should find a more forward spot and appears ready for a career best performance on Sunday afternoon. My single.

Race 11:

The sequence concludes with a maiden special weight event over the lawn. #4 Renata ran huge on debut for trainer Kenny McPeek and is hard to leave off your ticket, but is likely to get overbet. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro got a favorable race shape and had Paco Lopez aboard in her initial try. Paco is out of action and the pace may not be as contentious.
