Singles for carryovers at Santa Anita, Fair Grounds, and Turfway Park

March 4th, 2023

Saturday is a big day at Santa Anita. Four stakes worth a combined $1.6 million are on the agenda, including the San Felipe (G2). But the highlight from a betting standpoint is the mandatory payout of a $237,774 Rainbow Pick 6 carryover.

The sporting action is a bit quieter at Fair Grounds, where three stakes worth $75,000 apiece are scheduled. But a $35,881 Pick 5 carryover and a $1,373 Pick 6 carryover ensure there’s plenty of value for bettors to chase.

We can’t overlook the schedule at Turfway Park either. The Late Pick 5 (which encompasses the $150,000 John Battaglia Memorial and $150,000 Cincinnati Trophy) boasts a $99,210 carryover.

Planning to chase all the carryovers? We’re here to help with a suggested single (or two) for every sequence:

Fair Grounds, Race 4: $1,373 Pick 6 carryover (3:45 p.m. ET)
Fair Grounds, Race 5: $35,881 Pick 5 carryover (4:15 p.m. ET)

Race 5: $50,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (six furlongs): #2 Beleout (8-5)

Beleout has been in red-hot form since transitioning to the care of trainer Courtney Dandridge Jr., going 3-for-3. All three of her triumphs have come at Fair Grounds, including a neck triumph in a six-furlong allowance last month.

Beleout’s last three starts have produced Brisnet Speed ratings of 84, 87, and 87, significant since none of her rivals have earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 81 in their last three starts. A typical performance from Beleout should be sufficient to send this speedy filly to the winner’s circle.

Race 6: Edward J. Johnston Memorial (about one mile on turf): #6 Who Took the Money (4-5)

Who Took the Money has won 10 of his 15 starts, including four of his last five and six of his last eight. The five-year-old gelding is equally effective on both dirt and turf, with his turf victories including back-to-back romps in the Louisiana Champions Day Turf at Fair Grounds.

The second of those titles came on Jan. 7, when Who Took the Money rallied sharply to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths. At one time or another, he’s beaten six of the seven rivals he’ll face in the Edward J. Johnston Memorial field, so it’s easy to see why Who Took the Money is a 4-5 favorite and a logical Pick 5 single.

Santa Anita, Race 7: $237,774 Pick 6 mandatory payout (6:00 p.m. ET)

Race 11: Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1, one mile on turf): #6 Hong Kong Harry (9-5)

Hong Kong Harry has been almost unstoppable since arriving in the United States. The former British campaign has won five of his six stateside starts, including triumphs in the American (G3), Del Mar Mile (G2), and Seabiscuit H. (G2). His lone defeat came when finishing a troubled second in the Eddie Read (G2).

Hong Kong Harry won his debut and is 2-for-2 returning from winter layoffs, so the fact he hasn’t run since November shouldn’t be a concern. He’s turned in quick workouts in preparation for Saturday’s contest and should be ready to unleash the terrific acceleration he displayed to win the Seabiscuit by a neck in 1:39.79 for 1 1/16 miles.

Turfway Park, Race 5: $99,210 Pick 5 carryover (7:55 p.m. ET)

Race 6: Cincinnati Trophy (one mile on Tapeta): #3 Botanical (8-5)

Botanical has shown a clear-cut affinity for the Turfway Tapeta track. She employed pace-tracking tactics to smash a one-mile maiden special weight by 10 3/4 lengths, then wired a $50,000 allowance optional claimer over the same distance by 4 1/2 lengths.

In both of those races, Botanical finished fast, running her final quarter-mile fractions in :24.37 and :24.79. Sticking to the same track and distance should make Botanical difficult to defeat for hot trainer Brad Cox, a 25% winner at Turfway since Nov. 30 and a 30% winner teaming up with jockey Chris Landeros over the last two months.

Good luck!
