Sir Dudley Digges seeks second classic in Prince of Wales

A little over three weeks since registering a 15-1 upset of the Queen's Plate at Woodbine, Sir Dudley Digges will look to add the second jewel of Canada's Triple Crown Tuesday night at Fort Erie when he heads a field of eight in the C$500,000 Prince of Wales.

Contested over 1 3/16 miles, the Prince of Wales is the only leg of the Canadian Triple Crown contested on dirt. That shouldn't be an issue for Sir Dudley Digges, who's placed in both previous starts on the dirt, including a narrow maiden loss over a fast track Churchill Downs last November.

In contrast, Queen's Plate runner-up and beaten favorite Amis Gizmo has yet to try dirt in seven previous outings. However, as a son of multiple Grade 3 winner Giant Gizmo and the Victory Gallop mare Galloping Ami, he theoretically should have few issues. The Josie Carroll trainee turned in a strong five-furlong work over the Fort Erie main track July 19, breezing in 1:00.

"The horse let loose like he loves the track and I’m very happy with him," jockey Luis Contreras said after the work.

All On Red, third in the Queen's Plate in only his second start of the season, adds blinkers for the Prince of Wales. The son of Hard Spun broke his maiden over the Aqueduct main track in April.

Leavem In Malibu, sixth beaten four lengths in the Queen's Plate, has room to improve in this spot as does Niigon's Edge, who makes his second start following a four-month layoff.

Trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez team up with Battery, a Bernardini colt who skipped the Plate after a dull run in the Plate Trial June 12. The colt was an allowance winner at Gulfstream over nine furlongs in February prior to a last-place finish in the Louisiana Derby (G2).
