Sophomores on display at Harrah's Philadelphia
While many of the sport's top three-year-old colts and gelding trotters and pacers competed in lucrative stakes on Saturday night, a bevy of potential rising stars clashed in eight different divisions of the Liberty Bell at Harrah's Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.
Favorites dominated the four divisions of the Liberty Bell for sophomore pacing colts, with odds-on favorites Summer Side (Tim Tetrick), Q's Cruise (Tetrick) and Eddard Hanover (Yannick Gingras) scoring in 1:52.1, 1:51.4 and 1:51.3, respectively. But Boogie Shuffle (Tyler Buter) recorded the fastest clocking of the quartet when he prevailed narrowly as the 8-5 second choice over 27-1 longshot Mike's Z Tam (Pat Lachance) in 1:51 flat while odds-on choice Donttellmethatagain (Tetrick) settled for third after carving out the early fractions.
Then in the quartet of Liberty Bell divisions for sophomore trotting colts and geldings, odds-on choices Giveitgasandgo (Corey Callahan) and Two AM (Buter) scored in 1:54.3 and 1:53 flat, respectively, while President Lindy (Andy Miller) and Stealth Hanover (Simon Allard) both posted 5-1 upsets in 1:55 and 1:54, respectively. Two AM not only recorded the fastest final time in the group, he rallied from well off the pace with a powerful, three-wide bid en route to an eight-length score.
Tetrick and Delaware-based trainer Jim King, Jr. scored with Q's Cruise in one Liberty Bell division and suffered a narrow defeat with Donttellmethatagain in another, but they earned a hint of redemption by teaming up to win the overnight feature with Wakizashi Hanover, who narrowly prevailed in the non-winners of $20,500 last five starts class in 1:49.4. Wakizashi Hanover has faced much tougher in the past, including a victory in the Grade I, $1 million North America Cup final at age three.
