Spinaway Placegetters Seek Frizette Compensation
The two horses beaten into the minor money by Lady Ivanka in the Spinaway Stakes (G1) are seeking a grade one triumph in the Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park Oct. 8.
Maya Malibu, second by three-quarters of a length in the 7-furlong Spinaway, and Separationofpowers, a further 3 ¼ lengths behind in third, resume their rivalry, this time over a mile in the Frizette, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race which earns an automatic entry to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Separationofpowers has been made the 9-5 morning-line favorite. She started favorite in the Spinaway after winning her maiden by more than 11 lengths, but she was caught in a speed duel before fading to third.
Maya Malibu won her maiden by six lengths at Delaware Park before coming from well off the speed to finish second in the Spinaway. She’s been assessed as a 4-1 chance on the morning-line.
Purrfect Miss is the 5-1 morning-line third favorite. She was a close second at odds of more than 50-1 behind Southampton Way at her debut, and then won her maiden over six furlongs at Saratoga.
Rated a 6-1 chance is the Todd Pletcher-trained Critique, who had both her previous starts transferred from turf to dirt because of conditions. She finished second on debut before winning her second start by 16 lengths.
The other six contenders are assessed at double-figure morning-line odds. They include three Florida-breds that have each won their only starts: Arlington maiden winner Drama Run (10-1), and the Saratoga maiden winners Strategic Dreams (12-1) and Caledonia Road (12-1).
Adirondack Stakes third-place finisher Wall of Compassion (12-1), just behind Southampton Way, the horse that beat Purrfect Miss on her debut. Ellis Park maiden runner-up Go (20-1) and first-starter Teen Angel (30-1) complete the field.
The grade one form of Separationofpowers and Maya Malibu should be a valuable guide for the Frizette, though it’s debatable that 9-5 would be good odds if pari-mutuel punters agree. There’s still every chance for the others to shine; in particular, Critique looked very good when winning her maiden, and she should enjoy the step up to a mile.
In addition, if you like Purrfect Miss’s chances, don’t forget Wall of Compassion, who also has graded stakes form via the Adirondack.
