Spinster Stakes an Opportunity for Lockdown

After a frustrating run of minor placings during the year, Lockdown gets perhaps her best chance to win her first graded stakes race in the Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Oct 8.
With most of the best fillies and mares staying at home for their Breeders’ Cup Distaff preparations, Lockdown has been made the 3-1 morning-line favorite for the Spinster.
The contest doubles as a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, guaranteeing the winner a place in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
After winning the Busanda Stakes earlier this year, Lockdown has finished second in the Gazelle Stakes (G2), third in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), second in the Mother Goose Stakes (G2), sixth in the Alabama Stakes (G1), and most recently third in the Cotillion Stakes (G1).
Bar of Gold is the 7-2 second favorite after a season spent mostly contesting grade two and three races. She was second in the Presque Isle Downs Masters (G2) at her most recent start Sept. 18.
Romantic Vision, Blue Prize, and Tiger Moth – first, second, and third, respectively, in the Locust Grove Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs Sept. 16, are all back for this race.
Romantic Vision (5-1) had run well most of the year, her best effort being a second-place finish in the La Troienne Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs May 5, while Blue Prize (5-1) has had four second-place finishes from four starts since arriving from Argentina. Tiger Moth’s best effort was a victory in the Groupie Doll Stakes (G3) at Ellis Park Aug. 13.
Martini Glass (12-1) seeks her first stakes victory; her best effort this year was a second-place finish to Songbird in the Delaware Handicap (G1), while an intriguing runner is A Place to Shine, whose only start this season was a victory at Parx.
If form at the highest level is any guide, Lockdown should find a way to win. But in a 13-horse field, anything can happen. There’s likely to be some good money to be made in the multiples.
