Spot Plays for Assiniboia Downs closing day
Assiniboia Downs, outside Winnipeg, will end what has arguably been one of its most successful seasons in history on Tuesday. Establishing a niche racing on weekday evenings earlier this summer, Assiniboia has produced significantly higher handle than has been the case in recent years.
Because it's closing day there will be a mandatory dispersal of any carryover money in all exotic wagers, including the 20-cent Jackpot Pick 5. Provided it is not hit Monday evening, the carryover could be hovering around $150,000.
Here are some horses of interest during the Pick 5 sequence of Races 4-8.
Race 5 -- 10:35 p.m. ET
The multiple stakes-placed #8 STORM STRIDE (8-1) has won twice at conditioned levels this meet, was overmatched a touch against optional $10,000 claimers multiple times, and held her own two back at this level when forced to press the pace while wide in a shorter 5-furlong dash. This two-turn affair perhaps more favorable to the stalk-and pounce tactics she normally employs, and trainer/jock combo have done well by her this season.
Race 8 -- 12:05 a.m. ET
#6 KATS SECOND SILVER (5-1) claimed for $6,250 at Lone Star in early August in the hopes perhaps of making him an allowance-class runner here, but it didn't pan out. Although this plunge to $2,500 seems like a vastly negative drop, he didn't run so badly last out to think he can't be competitive here while shortening back up to one turn, which he prefers. Threat to rebound.
