Spot plays for Pimlico stakes on July 4

July 2nd, 2021

A four-pack of black-type races will highlight the holiday card at Pimlico on Sunday.

Race 7 -- Jameela S.

A full field of fillies and mares will compete in the five-furlong turf dash. I really like the chances of #8 Introduced for conditioner Jorge Duarte. The chestnut mare has run some big races sprinting on the green, on both firm and good surfaces, and it will be difficult to deny her late if the five-year-old runs her best under Toledo.

Chick Lang S. (G3) victor #1 Mighty Mischief is the one to beat in the six-furlong race for Asmussen, but I have a lot of interest in #4 Sibelius for trainer Jerry O’Dwyer. The gelded Not This Time sophomore impressed in his two maiden races, and I will give him a pass for tiring late in the Penn Mile S. (G2) last time out. Kentucky-bred chestnut will show vast improvement at a square price on Sunday.

Race 9 -- Caesar’s Wish S.

Eight fillies and mares will travel 1 1/16 miles in this affair. I expect the pace to be swift and contested and for the winner to rally from off the pace. #8 Landing Zone has not won since October, but the Claudio Gonzalez trainee has faced some tough foes along the way and fits well in this spot. Dark bay daughter of Morning Line has ample tactical foot, and she will get first run on the deep closers turning for home beneath Angel Cruz.

Race 10 -- Lite the Fuse S.

A six-furlong dash for the boys caps the stakes action, and seven are set to go postward in a tricky handicapping puzzle. The Steve Asmussen-trained #7 Yaupon is the one to beat and could easily get back to his winning ways on Sunday, but a pair of eighth-place finishes in succession leaves room for concern.

I have a soft spot for the eight-year-old #4 Laki, who is a Grade 3 winner on the surface and is more than capable of running a huge race on the oval. The gelded son of Cuba was sharp with a stakes triumph here two back, and he ran an even one against better most recently. Maryland-bred puts in top efforts when fresh and seems poised for a top result under Karamanos.
