Spreading It Around
Another round of the 2017 Orange Park Derby is in the books and the points got spread around even more as several unexpected greyhounds seized their opportunity with box to wire wins. Three of the four winners were not posted as favorites and that makes it extra interesting heading in the semi-final round races. Everyone left in the stakes is just a win out of the current top 8 spots, so this could turn into an eventful lead-up to the finals.
Rebounding to their first-round dominance was the Lester Raines Kennel. Winning two of the four races on the card in box to wire fashion, finishing one and two speed wise on the night, these were stellar performances. The best effort came from first round winner Nizy. In race 15 she beat the box, stole a lead, saw it shrink by the far turn, and gave a determined stretch run to pull away late for the slim win at the wire. The comment says it all, “Not To Be Denied”. Dutch Casey rallied late and stole away the place position at the wire for the chasing, and race favorite, greyhound Boc’s Queen Lady. Early threat Cbj Thunderbolt held on for fourth after fading back in the stretch.
The other winner came in the 11th race as Lee Banshee won a personal duel on the front end. Breaking close, well actually 2nd, he rushed hard through the turn to take over the early lead at the first call. Putting 2 lengths between him, and his early rival Businessasusual, there at the moment he was not going to be denied in this effort. Coasting around the racetrack on the lead, he maintained his margin to the far turn and all the way through to the wire. Businessasusual broke well, but was outrushed for the front end. He gave his all throughout, and even though he couldn’t gain on the leader, he was the only real threat in this effort. A distance closing show went to Cbj Sooner was Royal Clarion came back some in the stretch for the final spot in the superfecta.
Getting stronger with every start, Gs Humongous is liking the new surroundings over 660 yards. In rounds one, and two, he led for most of the race to only be run down in the final few strides. Not this time out! Breaking on top in race 7, he drew away two full lengths early on and never looked back. Don’t get me wrong, he was pressed throughout, but was not going to be run down on this occasion. Lasting all the way to the wire, as several jockeyed for position behind him in the stretch, Gs Humongous proved unstoppable at the finish line. Closing from way back, Lk’s Fanciful found the rail, and her stride late in the race to close past the chaser for place at the finish line. Kells Pretender gave a great effort and pushed the leader all the way to the stretch. Outfinished at the wire, Pretender settled for show. Also in the mix was Herstal. After being blocked on a run in the far turn, she rallied again and completed the superfecta in this effort.
The final stakes race on the card, the 9th, was won by Pat C Typhoon. Popping the box, Typhoon seized immediate control of the race and didn’t slow down until he was past the finish line. Sure, his lead might have gotten smaller as he went around the racetrack, but he still won by a length and was not far off the fastest times on the card. He did want he needed to do to score a win, and 19 points, at the wire. Dutch Dalton gave a great effort, but came up just short at the finish line. Breaking close, he gave chase at the leader early and chipped away at his lead the entire way around the racetrack. Closing from 3 lengths back, he made the leader work hard to get the win, even though he didn’t quite get the job done. The even paced steady threat Rt Banana Foster was third, as Boc’s All I Got closed some to secure the 4th place spot at the finish line.
Once again, the field will be trimmed down and only the top 24, 3 races, will move on for a chance at the finals. The semis will take place on Saturday evening November 4th, so make you plans and don’t miss out on the best routers at the racetrack here at bestbet Jacksonville.
