Stakes spot plays for Lone Star Park on June 13

Five black-type races for Texas-bred runners will highlight a big Sunday of action at Lone Star Park.

Race 4 -- Horse Racing Hall of Fame S.

The 1 1/16-mile turf test gets the stakes action underway and boasts a field of six, including defending champ #5 Redatory (9-2). The chestnut is winless since that triumph, however, and I will side elsewhere.

#1 Moojab Jr (2-1) was a close third in the race in 2020 and I think he will better that result on Sunday. In-form gelding draws well on the rail for the contest, and he possesses arguably the best late kick in the field, too. Iram Diego rides.

Race 6 -- Texas Stallion Staunch Avenger Division S.

Five-furlong dash for juveniles attracted just five, and I will take a shot with #3 Bodymoor Heath (5-2) in his debut offering. Gray son of young sire Bradester was a $20,000 summer yearling purchase, and I like some of his morning works for Gustafson, who is winning at a 25% clip for the meeting. Lane Luzzi will be up.

Race 7 -- Danny Shifflett Scholarship S.

Fillies and mares will go 7 1/2 furlongs on the sod in a good betting race. A dozen will go postward in the affair that is expected to produce a fast and contested early pace, so I am tabbing a late runner for success. #12 Corluna (20-1) rolled home a big winner in the race in 2020 and is very inviting at a huge morning-line number. Chestnut does her best work at Lone Star, and she figures to get a fine set up to the top of the lane as well.

Race 8 -- Texas Stallion Pan Zareta Division S.

Juvenile fillies will run five-eighths on the main surface in this heat. I will keep an eye on the early wagering on first-time starter #2 Texas Thunder (8-1). Karen Jacks pupil is kin to a pair of two-year-old winners, and I love that her connections went to $112,000 to nab the daughter of Bradester. The April foal should be a runner.

Race 9 -- Wayne Hanks Memorial S.

A field of seven will vie in the 6 1/2-furlong dirt dash. Steve Asmussen’s #3 Direct Dial (3-1) has come out victorious in his last four stakes races with state-bred foes, which includes a daylight tally in this event last campaign. Gray son of Too Much Bling will stalk the early pace before inching clear in the final furlong under Elliot.
