Sunday's notable 2-year-old maidens: 1st at Saratoga

Saratoga's 1ST race, 5 1/2 furlongs on turf for state-breds (1 p.m. EDT)

Although I intended to stick with open-company maiden special weights, there were a few interesting pedigrees in this New York-bred dash.

Chief among them is Too Discreet, a full brother to Grade 1-winning millionaire Discreet Marq. Like big sister, he is trained by Christophe Clement.

Wesley Ward sends out Brooklyn Speights, a Big Brown gelding out of a full sister to multiple stakes-winning turf sprinter (and Monmouth course record-setter) Rose Catherine.

Call the Lord tired badly in his debut for David Donk, but could show more second time out while switching to the state-bred ranks. Hall of Famer John Velazquez picks up the mount on the son of freshman sire Here Comes Ben. Although he is by a sprinter, his dam is a Flower Alley half-sister to Breeders' Cup Marathon (G2) winner London Bridge from the family of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Magical Fantasy. Call the Lord may want more ground at some point.

Leaveematthegate is a Kitten's Joy who brought $105,000 at OBS March, while Heated Verdict, by freshman sire Court Vision, fetched $130,000 at the same sale. They start their careers for Leah Gyarmati and George Weaver, respectively.

The main-track-only hopeful, Willie's Mojo, represents the Repole Stable/Todd Pletcher tandem. The homebred is from the first crop of Uncle Mo, who is already making a splash with his babies, and out of a half-sister to My Pal Charlie, Bwana Charlie and Bwana Bull. Thus current sprint sophomore Cinco Charlie is also close up in the family.
