Sunday's notable 2-year-old maidens: 5th at Del Mar

Del Mar's 5TH race, one mile on turf (7:10 p.m. EDT)

Rideo has a strong pedigree befitting a Wertheimer et Frere homebred. By Candy Ride, he was produced by a Trempolino half-sister to sensational turf champ Leroidesanimaux. That means that he descends from the further family of blue hen Hasili (the dam of Dansili, Banks Hill, Intercontinental, Cacique, Champs Elysees et al). The Richard Mandella pupil has posted a solid series of works in advance of this debut and could be sharper than usual for a firster from this barn.

Rare Candy was acquired by Tarabilla Farms and transferred to David Hofmans after a good debut in a turf sprint at Belmont Park, where he was a fast-closing second for Steve Asmussen. The step up to a mile should be just what he needs. The winner of that maiden, Shoot Craps, came back to flop in the Bashford Manor (G3), but the third Show Bound has since finished second in the Bashford Manor and third in Saturday's 5TH at Saratoga (to Saratoga Mischief and Greenpointcrusader). From the first crop of Twirling Candy, Rare Candy is out of a Fusaichi Pegasus mare who is also responsible for the multiple stakes-placed Wings of Pegasus. A prominent family member is Hopeful (G1) hero Salt Lake, and his second and third dams both placed in the Spinaway (G1).

The scratch of Midvale Magic has allowed the first also-eligible, Osceola Pond, to draw into the field. Despite being by Irish/American turf champion Cape Blanco, the Glen Hill Farm homebred stayed in a sloppy off-the-turf maiden at Belmont and finished third to Magna Light (who was just disqualified from a convincing Sanford [G3] victory). Needless to say, two turns on turf is just what he wants. Likely to improve second time out for Tom Proctor in any event, he is a half-brother to turf stakes scorer Lori's Store. They were produced by Big Promise, a daughter of Rahy who was stakes-placed on turf.

Hollywood Don is a Tapit half-brother to multiple turf stakes winner West Ocean, a course record-setter over 5 1/2 furlongs on the Stall-Wilson turf at Fair Grounds. Their dam, Ocean Drive, is a four-time Grade 3 heroine on the turf and a half-sister to Futurity (G1) winner Traitor and $2.2 million-earner Sun King. After failing to reach his reserve at a $400,000 bid at Fasig-Tipton Florida in March, he went to Rockingham Ranch for $245,000 at OBS in April. Brice Blanc rides for trainer Peter Miller.

Scatastrophe, a $280,000 purchase at OBS this April, is bred to be a juvenile as a son of Scat Daddy and the stakes-winning Sky Mesa mare Sky Mystic. Both parents also give him a presumptive turf ability. The dam, who broke her maiden on turf and captured the California Oaks on the Golden Gate Tapeta, is a half-sister to three stakes scorers, notably Grade 3-winning juvenile Boston Bull. Owned by Reddam Racing and trained by Simon Callaghan, Scatastrophe may be better second time out but is still qualified to run well on debut.

Handful of Stripes, who retreated to last in his debut sprinting on the Churchill dirt, is entitled to rebound for trainer Mike Stidham. By Flower Alley and from the further family of Drosselmeyer, the $130,000 yearling has lured Rafael Bejarano into the saddle. Clude, a fading fourth in his premiere at Los Alamitos, is an Include half-brother to Brazilian Horse of the Year and multiple U.S. Grade 1 star Pico Central.

The scratched Midvale Magic, a slow-starting seventh as the 8-5 favorite in his Santa Anita debut, is sure to progress for Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer. As a son of Lucky Pulpit (California Chrome's sire) and multiple stakes victress Gn. Group Meeting, he is inbred to Seattle Slew. Two of the also-eligibles who didn't draw in are also worth remembering -- Letithappen, a three-quarter brother to Hollywood Derby (G1) winner Ultimate Eagle, and Unapologetic, a Temple City colt out of a half-sister to stakes winner Revolutionary Act (herself the dam of Grade 2-placed stakes victors Night Party and American Act).

Nearly all of the above mentioned are Del Mar Futurity (G1) nominees, except for Rare Candy (presumably because he was with Asmussen at the closing stage) and Osceola Pond (probably because he's a turf type).
