Saratoga's 6TH race, 5 1/2 furlongs on turf (3:47 p.m. EDT)
Graham Motion sends out War Order, a $200,000 Keeneland September purchase by Qatari connections, who comes off a pair of bullet works at Fair Hill. The War Front colt is out of a Seeking the Gold half-sister to Grade 3 winner and Belmont course record-setter Fortitude. His third dam is champion two-year-old filly Outstandingly, from the branch of the *La Troienne line responsible for Buckpasser.
Spicy Blonde takes on the boys in her debut for Wesley Ward. The $150,000 OBS March juvenile is by Speightstown and out of a Theatrical half-sister to Grade 2 winner For All We Know. Her second dam is Over All, victorious in five graded stakes as a two-year-old topped by the Spinaway (G1) and Matron (G1). Other smart juveniles in the family are Mighty Caroline, Cyclogenisis and Renee's Queen.
Todd Pletcher's Ian Smith is likewise bred to be quick, as a Wildcat Heir colt out of a half-sister to Breeders' Futurity (G1) scorer Joha. His second dam, Mujado, blitzed to a Delaware course record when winning a five-furlong stakes in :56.16.
Brass Compass, a $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile, is by Malibu Moon and out of a full sister to Hollywood Futurity (G1) winner Stormello and Del Mar Derby (G2) victor My Best Brother. Another of the dam's half-siblings is Gala Award, successful in the Palm Beach (G3) and Pennine Ridge on turf. The Live Oak Plantation runner makes his first start for Eddie Plesa Jr., who boasts a 23% strike rate with firsters.
The Eddie Kenneally-trained Urban Bourbon should profit by the move to turf. The City Zip colt was a troubled ninth in his debut on the dirt at Churchill, behind Mayor Mac (scratched as the 6-5 favorite in the Mountaineer Juvenile), Sticksstatelydude (winner of Saturday's 2ND at Saratoga) and next-out Ellis winner Unbridled Outlaw. The $135,000 OBS March purchase is out of stakes scorer Fools in Love, a half-sister to current Louisiana Derby (G2) hero International Star. Recall that International Star broke his maiden on turf and also finished second in the With Anticipation (G2) here last summer.
Rappel is a beautifully bred son of Elusive Quality out of a full sister to the high-class French mare Esoterique. His second dam has produced five additional stakes winners, including the Group 2 trio of Russian Hope, Russian Cross and Archange d'Or. The Marc Keller homebred gets a fair amount of stamina from that female line, so he's sure to progress from whatever he does here for Bobby Ribaudo.
Don't Be So Salty is by a precocious influence in Tiz Wonderful, and his broodmare sire is Unbridled's Song. The Florida-bred gelding has posted some swift works for owner/trainer Adam Rice, including a glib five-eighths in :58.78 on the Presque Isle Tapeta July 8.
Argot switches surfaces after tiring as the 6-5 favorite in his debut at Ellis Park, where he was beaten six lengths by John Q. Public (subsequently the trailer in the Sanford [G3]). Trained by Ken McPeek, the Stone Farm homebred is entitled to prefer turf. He is by Stroll, out of a Storm Cat mare, second dam by Kingmambo, from the fantastic family of Rainbow View, Just as Well, Raven's Pass et al.
Its All Relevant, who brought $360,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, is a Hard Spun half-brother to two recent stakes winners -- Tiz Shea D (Indiana Derby [G2]) and A.P. Indian (Donald LeVine Memorial). They are all out of multiple stakes victress and Grade 2-placed Ender's Sister. As her name implies, the A.P. Indy mare is a full sister to multiple Grade 2-placed stakes scorer Ender's Shadow. With that background, the Dominick Schettino pupil likely wants to go further.
Denim Blue is by speed influence In Summation, while Ward's main-track-only Louise the Laser sold for $220,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic in May.
