Sunday's notable 2-year-old maidens: 7th at Del Mar

A squadron of Del Mar Debutante (G1) nominees will clash in this spot.

Songbird, a $400,000 Saratoga purchase by Fox Hill Farms, is a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro and Grade 2 heroine Ivanavinalot. A top Calder juvenile herself, Ivanavinalot also appears as the second dam of Grade 3-winning sprinter Mico Margarita. Songbird has been training forwardly for Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, who boasts a 27% strike rate with first-time starters. The one cause for pause is that she's drawn the rail.

Stablemate Tiz a Tommy Town was beaten a half-length in her debut, perhaps giving her a decisive experience edge over a field largely composed of newcomers. By Speightstown, the $160,000 Keeneland September yearling hails from a turf-oriented family. She is the first foal from It Tiz, a debut maiden winner over Del Mar's Polytrack and fourth in the 2009 Debutante who ultimately won a pair of turf stakes. It Tiz is a Tiznow half-sister to Canadian champion turf mare Solid Appeal, so it wouldn't be a surprise if she ends up finding a home on the lawn.

Treasuring is the definition of a blueblood: by Smart Strike out of a Storm Cat half-sister to Rags to Riches and Jazil. Treasuring is herself a full sister to Hollywood Starlet (G1) winner Streaming, who didn't debut until November of her two-year-old year. Indeed, Treasuring's half-siblings have tended to take a little more time, such as the stakes-placed pair of Gifting and Distracting, who both started off as three-year-olds. Another half-sister, Cascading, won first time out in September of her juvenile season and peaked in the Glorious Song that November. As a May 7 foal, Treasuring is likelier to fit that pattern. With this background, it makes sense that Hall of Famer Bob Baffert believes she'll come on for this run (as he told Daily Racing Form).

Annie's Curls is by Hall of Famer Curlin, whose recent juvenile winners include Schuylverville (G3) queen Off the Tracks and the hero of Saturday's 6TH at Del Mar, Exaggerator. The Mike Stidham trainee should get speed from her dam, sprint maiden winner Keiko, by First Samurai. Deeper in the family one finds mother/daughter Grade 1 winners Only Queens and Tactile.

Gone to Bali is from the first crop of Grade 2-winning millionaire Gone Astray, himself a Phipps blueblood, and out of a half-sister to Grade 3-winning turfer Violon Sacre. Her dam is by champion sprinter Aldebaran (best known for siring Main Sequence) and out of multiple turf stakes winner Histoire Sainte, suggesting that she might be versatile regarding surface. The also-eligible Sutton's Smile draws in for Phil D'Amato. Although from the first crop of turf supremo Paddy O'Prado, she is out of an Unbridled's Song mare, and her second dam is Grade 2 dirt winner Hello Liberty. That dirt proficiency is coming through in her works, highlighted by a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 at San Luis Rey earlier this month. Chalking It Up, an Awesome Again filly from the Simon Callaghan barn, has little to speak of under her first four dams. Out of Fairmount Park stakes winner Miss Fontana, she brought $130,000 at OBS March.

Cover Song has a fantastic pedigree, but it screams turf as the marriage of two champions from abroad. So even though she is engaged in the Debutante, I'm tempted to view this as a place to get started before she stretches out and switches surfaces. She is by Australian champion Fastnet Rock, whose current headliners include Epsom Oaks (G1) shocker Qualify and Pretty Polly (G1) winner Diamondsandrubies, and out of Irish/French highweight Misty for Me, a four-time Group 1 star and heroine of the Irish 1000 Guineas (G1). Purchased by Spendthrift Farm for $450,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, she is trained by Carla Gaines.

Exactamente, from the first crop of 2010 Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Best Pal (G2) winner J P's Gusto, is a half-sister to stakes-placed juvenile Solitary. Yet as a firster for Keith Desormeaux, she probably needs this one. She's not nominated to the Debutante, but Desormeaux's smart winner Exaggerator wasn't in the Futurity either. Lady Cloud (not a Debutante nominee) has a lot of ground to make up on Tiz a Tommy Town from her distant third in their mutual debut. By Broken Vow, she is out of a half-sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Tanda.

Baffert withdrew his other entrant, $775,000 yearling purchase Jade Princess. The Tapit filly is out of multiple Grade 1-placed turfiste Jade Queen, a Giant's Causeway mare who is already the dam of two juvenile winners. With this being the multi-talented family of Harmonious and champion Landaluce, she obviously bears watching.
