Semper Fortis is a half-brother to Carpe Diem and J. B.'s Thunder, both Breeders' Futurity (G1) winners, so the Doug O'Neill pupil ought to be ready to roll this season. By Distorted Humor, he went to Spendthrift Farm for $525,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. Semper Fortis is out of the Grade 2-placed stakes victress Rebridled Dreams, an Unbridled's Song mare who is also the dam of multiple English stakes scorer and Group 3-placed Doncaster Rover. All five of her winners broke their maidens at two, most of them in sprints, reinforcing the look of precocity. Semper Fortis was nominated to the Del Mar Futurity (G1) under his original name, Mr. Huge.
Global Event, by American Pharoah's sire Pioneerof the Nile, starts his career for the same trainer. Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, as agent, bought the juvenile for $685,000 at Fasig-Tipton Florida in March. He is the second foal from the Smart Strike mare Lady Bonita, whose first won his debut at two. From a poorer branch of the family responsible for Easy Goer, Global Event is apparently not nominated to the Futurity. Two turns will be his game, so this dash may be a bit shorter than ideal.
Who's Out is a May 13 foal, but that was no hindrance to his $350,000 price at OBS March. From the barn of Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, a 27% trainer with first-time starters, he is a Tale of Ekati half-brother to Grade 2 hero Bourbon Courage. His second dam is an unraced full sister to champion two-year-old colt Chief's Crown. Like most in here, Who's Out is engaged in the Futurity.
Blameitonthelaw, a $320,000 OBS March purchase debuting for John Sadler, has an intriguing pedigree pattern. His sire, Blame, hails from the phenomenal family of Sadler's Wells and Nureyev -- as does his broodmare sire Stormy Atlantic. And his dam, turf stakes winner Letter of the Law, herself doubles up on the same clan, by being inbred to full siblings Moccasin and Lt. Stevens. That adds up to a potent example of the Rasmussen Factor, piling on the crosses of a superior matriarch in *Rough Shod II. Blameitonthelaw was firing bullets at San Luis Rey before moving to Del Mar, where he is engaged in the Futurity.
Futurity nominee South Detroit is from the first crop of the Bernardini stallion Wilburn. His dam is a Harlan's Holiday half-sister to Sunland Derby (G3) winner Twice the Appeal, from the family of multiple Grade 3 scorer Romansh. As a May 6 foal, South Detroit may be better in time, but note that trainer Phil D'Amato wins with 22% of his firsters in maiden special weights.
Stardust Moon is one of two from the Jim Cassidy barn. Owned by DP Racing (which also owns stablemate Street Rules in partnership), the $130,000 Keeneland September yearling is by Malibu Moon and out of Grade 2-placed Warm Shower, a turf/synthetic performer by Dynaformer. The juvenile's second dam, Grade 2 heroine Caught in the Rain, is also better known for her turf exploits. Yet Stardust Moon has drilled a couple of quick three furlongs in :35 1/5 at Galway Downs in Temecula, and he is nominated to the Futurity.
Street Rules is a homebred by Street Cry and out of Maxxi Arte, who herself raced for the same connections -- Deron Pearson and Fontana Racing -- and was also trained by Cassidy. A Danehill Dancer mare from the same Aga Khan family as German/Italian highweight Linngari, Maxxi Arte flopped in her debut on the old Del Mar dirt in 2005. She never raced on the stuff again, and ultimately became a stakes winner on the Del Mar turf. Since Street Rules is not a Futurity nominee, he could be using this as a place to get started before stretching out on the grass.
The Walther Solis-trained Horsty is intensely inbred (2x3) to Danzig, being by War Chant and with his second dam being multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Versailles Treaty (both by Danzig). Although the well-bred Versailles Treaty has produced Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner George Vancouver and Grade 2 victor Saarland, that level of ability has apparently not been transmitted to, or via, her daughter Supreme Council, Horsty's dam.
