Surfside Tiara could complete a big day for her family: her near maternal relative, Aidan O'Brien juvenile Air Force Blue, just captured Sunday's Phoenix (G1) at the Curragh. The Jerry Hollendorfer filly missed by a half-length as the even-money favorite in her debut to Undisputed (who's in Wednesday's Sorrento [G2]). A $120,000 OBS March purchase, she's by a precocious influence in Scat Daddy and out of a More Than Ready mare. Her second dam is a full sister to champion two-year-old filly Flanders, herself the dam of champion Surfside. An echo in the name of this Del Mar Debutante (G1) nominee?
Hollendorfer also sends out first-time starter Dreamarcher, a $150,000 OBS April two-year-old from the first crop of Archarcharch. Out of a Chester House half-sister to multiple Grade 3-winning sprinter High Stakes Player, the Debutante nominee has three fairly close crosses of Mr. Prospector (4x3x4). The most notable relatives appear at a further remove in the female line -- champion Wajima and Naskra.
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert likewise had two Debutante nominees entered here, but after the scratch of Treasuring, he relies on Jade Princess. A $775,000 Keeneland September purchase, the Don Alberto Stable runner is by Tapit and out of the multiple Grade 1-placed Giant's Causeway mare Jade Queen. Her dam is already responsible for two winners, both as juveniles. Jade Princess's second dam is Grade 2 heroine Jade Flush, also the granddam of multiple Grade 1 turf queen Harmonious. Her third dam is a full sister to ill-fated champion Landaluce, a Del Mar Debutante winner herself. She'll want two turns; it's just a question of how soon.
Don Alberto Stable has another well-bred type in Candy Genovesa, who's entitled to need this first start for Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale. The $150,000 Keeneland September yearling is by Candy Ride and out of a Giant's Causeway half-sister to two Chilean classic winners, champion Crisantemo and Cefalu. Her third dam, Cristalline, is herself a Chilean champion and dam of champions Crystal House and Crystal Clear.
Bold Intent, a $240,000 OBS March juvenile, ought to be precocious. The Scat Daddy filly is out of a Grindstone half-sister to Grade 3-winning juvenile (and Churchill track record-setter) Leelanau. The dam is also a half-sister to Grade 2-winning sprinter Abraaj and to the dam of multiple Group 3 hero Maftool. Yet the O.J. Jauregui trainee is not nominated to the Debutante.
Albeit, who also brought $240,000 at OBS March, basically took an educational tour of Del Mar in her debut in the slop. The Reddam/Doug O'Neill representative wasn't expected to do much that day, going off at nearly 25-1. As a Debutante nominee, she's better than that. The Mineshaft filly is out of a full sister to Grade 2-winning sprinter Teuflesberg. Her dam is by Johannesburg and also traces to his female line. Thus she sports the Rasmussen Factor, being inbred to State, the noted matron by Nijinsky II and out of a full sister to Round Table. This is also the family of Pulpit and Tale of the Cat.
Dreamy Art was best of the rest behind Baffert's exciting Pretty N Cool (a top threat in the Sorrento). The Adam Kitchingman trainee might have been flattered by that result, however, since she raced in second throughout, and a few rivals didn't put their best foot forward in the slop. Nominated to the Debutante under her prior name (Tiz the Breeze), she's from the first crop of Tiz the One, a son of Tiznow who won his only two career starts for Chad Brown. Dreamy Art is a half-sister to Real Good Deal winner Seven Nation Army. Their dam is a Woodman half-sister to Victory Ride and River Flyer, from the family of Worldly Manner.
One of those who never got involved behind Pretty N Cool was Midnight in Giada. A $200,000 Keeneland September yearling, the Jim Cassidy filly is by Midnight Lute and out of Grade 3-placed juvenile Chagall, by Successful Appeal. The Debutante nominee is inbred to both Fappiano and In Reality. She descends from the family of Grade 2-winning sprint millionaire Diabolical and multiple Group 3 victress What a Name. Her fourth dam is Grade 1 turf queen Plenty of Grace, a half-sister to champion turf mare Soaring Softly.
Street Goddess didn't factor after a slow start in her debut, but could wake up with the addition of blinkers for G.F. Almeida. She's also been training well in the interim. By Street Boss and out of a Puplit mare, she comes from the same female line as Grade 2 winner Cyber Secret, and further back, Broom Dance and son End Sweep. The one curiosity is that she went for only $40,000 at Barretts March, half of her $80,000 price as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling.
