Tapit Already a Legendary Sire
Tapit was a decent racehorse. In 2004, he won the Grade 3 Laurel Futurity. He also won the Wood Memorial. But, he finished 9th in both the Kentucky Derby and the Pennsylvania Derby.
After being retired, Tapit was expected to be a good stud horse. I don't believe anyone expected him to become America's best stud horse. Smarty Jones almost won the Triple Crown in 2004. Ghostzapper dominated the BC Classic. Even Kitten's Joy, who became the Eclipse winning turf horse of the year, had been unbelievable.
Although Gainesway Farm knew Tapit's potential as a stud horse, I don't believe they ever expected this. Tapit's 2018 breeding fee is an unbelievable $300,000. That's a Storm Cat number. Frosted
Any other year and Frosted might have won the Triple Crown. That's how good of a horse he was. Unfortunately for Frosted, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and owner Godolphin, 2015 was the year that the brilliant American Pharoah broke a 37-year Triple Crown drought.
Frosted battled American Pharoah as well as he could. He just wasn't in the same league as the Pioneerof the Nile, Bob Baffert trained, superstar. He had no shot versus Pharoah. Godolphin has high hopes for Frosted as a sire, though.
Tonalist won the 2014 Belmont Stakes. In the process, he denied California Chrome a Triple Crown. He finished third in the Travers Stakes as the favorite before beating older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Although Tonalist finished 5th in the Breeders Cup Classic as a 4-year-old, he did end his career on a high-note when winning the Grade 1 Cigar Mile in the final race of his career.
Untapable
Untapable's form went south in 2016. Up until then, she was the most consistent filly and mare in the United States. She produced Rachel Alexandra-like form in her three-year-old season. She won the kentucky Oaks, Mother Goose, Cotillion, and Breeders' Cup Distaff. The lone Grade 1 win as a 4-year-old was the Apple Blossom. She did finish second in the Ogden Phipps. She also finished second in the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes.
Cupid
In 2018, Cupid could develop into Bob Baffert's top handicap horse. That says a lot because Cupid's going to share a barn with Collected and West Coast. Baffert never gave up on Cupid. He knew the horse could run 1 1/4 miles. That's exactly what Cupid did when winning the the Gold Cup at Santa Anita.
I can forgive Cupid's 10th place finish in the Las Vegas Dirt Mile. None of Bob's horses liked Del Mar during this year's Breeders' Cup. The fact that Drefong failed in the BC Sprint proves that.
Lani
Lani hasn't won a race since the UAE Derby. Part of the problem is that his connections continue to race him in Grade 1 events. Lani might need to work his way up to a Grade 1. If I'm Lani's connections, I'd seriously consider sending him to Santa Anita. They could take advantage of the Ship and Stay Program while familiarizing Lani with true dirt tracks.
