Saratoga Graded Stakes Schedule Overview
by Alastair Bull
It’s one of the great social events in New York State, and one of the great spots for fans of the horse. Most of all, Saratoga is home to some of the best racing, and betting, in the world – even if it’s got the deserved reputation as the “Graveyard of Champions” following defeats to outstanding gallopers like Man o’War, Secretariat, and American Pharoah.
Saratoga hosts 35 graded stakes races during its summer meet, including 16 Grade I races – 13 on the dirt track and three on turf.
The richest race at the carnival is the $1.25 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 26, the traditional midsummer highlight for 3-year-olds. Many top sophomores who’ve contested the Triple Crown target this Grade I race, but it’s also a race where horses that missed the Triple Crown can put themselves forward for 3-year-old championship rankings – it was the Travers in which Arrogate announced his presence last year with a recordbreaking victory.
The Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) July 29 is an important lead-up, and is set to be the summer starting point for many top 3-yearolds, including Preakness winner Cloud Computing.
Three-year-old dirt track fillies get two chances at Grade I honors at Saratoga – the Coaching Club American Oaks July 23, and the Alabama Stakes Aug. 19. Outstanding filly Songbird won both last year.
The best older horses aiming toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic have some rich targets at Saratoga, most notably the $1.2 million Whitney (G1) Aug. 5 and the $750,000 Woodward Stakes (G1) Sept. 2. Top races for the older females heading toward the Breeders’ Cup Distaff include the Personal Ensign (G1) Aug. 26.
Saratoga also provides great opportunities for dirt sprinters, most notably the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) July 29 and the Forego Stakes (G1) Aug 26. Three-year-old sprinters have one of their most notable targets of the year, the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) (formerly the King’s Bishop Stakes) Aug. 26, while there are Grade I races for 3-year-old sprinting fillies (the Test Stakes, Aug 5), and fillies and mares of all ages (the Ballerina, Aug 26).
Watch also for the earliest Grade I tests for juveniles in the eastern states, the Spinaway Stakes for fillies Sept. 2 and the Hopeful Stakes Sept. 4.
Saratoga also features three Grade I turf races. The richest of these is the $1 million Sword Dancer Handicap, over a mile and a half. It usually attracts one of the best turf fields of the season, and in the past two years was won by the outstanding Flintshire. Some of the best turf fillies and mares in the land contest the Diana Stakes (G1) July 22, and turf milers are catered for in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1) Aug 12.
With so much quality racing, there’s no shortage of great wagering opportunities. It will be a great meeting.

Saratoga Synonymous With 2-Year-Old Racing
by James Scully
Connections point their promising youngsters, whether regallybred or conceived on a modest budget, toward the boutique meet in upstate New York and future standouts emerge every year from Saratoga’s excellent 2-year-old program. Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Belmont Stakes hero Tapwrit are recent examples of major race winners who competed as juveniles at Saratoga.
Along with an abundance of maiden special weight events, Saratoga offers three graded events for each gender on dirt along with state-bred and turf stakes during the six-week session.
Let’s look at some notable 2-year-old performers so far this year who may be pointing toward Saratoga, listed by trainer:
Todd Pletcher
A 12-time leading trainer at Saratoga, Todd Pletcher had a sixyear run snapped by Chad Brown in 2016. With Brown’s forte being turf racing (he led Pletcher by a 26-8 margin last year), Pletcher needs to significantly outpace his rival in 2-year-old races in order to wrest back the crown. His advantage was 15-5 last year and Pletcher will be looking to add to his juvenile win total in 2017 with an arsenal of more than 50 horses, including many who haven’t started yet. Here are some with experience to watch for:
ADMIRAL JIMMY: Gulfstream debut maiden winner exits third in June 9 Tremont at Belmont. Jimmy Creed colt nominated to July 22 Sanford (G3).
BAL HARBOUR: Second-time out Gulfstream winner, First Samurai colt nominated to Sanford.
BERNADETTA: Bernardini filly romped at Gulfstream when unveiled in early July.
CLASSY DANCER: Captured initial attempt on Gulfstream turf and Speightstown filly will look to rebound from fifth as favorite in July 1 Brave Raj on dirt.
EARTH: Won at first asking on Gulfstream turf in mid-June. Orb colt nominated to Sanford.
PURE SILVER: Easily defeated New York-bred foes at Belmont. Daughter of Mission Impazible nominated to July 21 Schuylerville (G3).
SCRAPPER: $600,000 Orb colt just missed when debuting at Gulfstream in early June, finishing second as 4-5 favorite.
STAINLESS: Impressive first-out winner at Gulfstream in late May, Flatter filly appears headed to Schuylerville.
SUGAR QUEEN: Belmont debut winner exits fourth as favorite in June 8 Astoria. Gemologist filly nominated to Schuylerville.
WHAT A CATCH: Smashing first-out winner at Belmont, Justin Phillip colt continued to impress leading wire-to-wire in recent New York-bred stakes.
Steve Asmussen
The leading trainer at the spring/summer Churchill Downs meet, Steve Asmussen wins plenty of 2-year-old races. Hall of Famer has conditioned numerous champions and captured 2-of-3 legs of the Triple Crown, with the Kentucky Derby being one of the few omissions on his resume. He has finished second twice, including Lookin at Lee this year, and we have the chance to see some of his early candidates for the 2018 Run for the Roses as Asmussen figures to be well-represented in both juvenile divisions at the Spa.
BAFFIN: Drew off smartly in June debut at Churchill and Justin Phillip colt is targeting opening-weekend Sanford.
BUY SELL HOLD: First winner from Violence, gray filly defeated males in Kentucky Juvenile at Churchill the second-time out. Will try to make it three straight in Schuylerville.
COPPER BULLET: Terrific maiden winner second time out but immaturity cost him as he recorded an eventful runner-up in Bashford Manor (G3). More Than Ready colt could target August 13 Saratoga Special (G2).
DIRECT DIAL: Texas-bred son of Too Much Bling crushed open foes at Keeneland and exits a respectable second in Tremont. Will bring high speed to Sanford.
LAUDATION: Convincing odds-on winner the second-time out at Churchill in late June, Congrats filly is nominated to Schuylerville.
RERIDE: Caught the eye blistering maiden foes at Churchill Downs. Candy Ride colt hasn’t worked since mid-June so status is unknown.
SHE’S A JULIE: Elusive Quality filly rolled first-time out at Churchill in late May and will look to rebound after unplaced effort in Debutante on sloppy track.
Mark Casse
Mark Casse has raced both of his 2-year-old Breeders’ Cup race winners, Classic Empire and Catch a Glimpse, at Saratoga and will try to improve upon last year’s 10-win total with an expected solid roster of juveniles.
BLUEBLOOD: City Zip colt 2-for-2 on Woodbine’s Tapeta, winning Victoria Stakes most recently, and Fox Hill Farms colorbearer eligible to try a Spa stakes.
FLAMEAWAY: Rolled to a front-running score at Woodbine in late May and Scat Daddy colt training at Saratoga for second outing.
MO DIDDLEY: Debut Churchill winner was flattered when fourth-placer Shangroyal captured salty Belmont maiden next out. Uncle Mo colt nominated to Sanford.
SNOWFIRE: $500,000 Tapit filly rolled to four-length tally at Churchill first-time out in late June. Nominated to Schuylerville.
Wesley Ward
Wesley Ward is well-known for his prowess with young runners and Saratoga is a typical destination. But it won’t be a surprise to see him ship out for a Del Mar stakes given that the Breeders’ Cup will be hosted by the seaside oval this year.
ARAWAK: Runaway Belmont debut winner didn’t handle turf at Royal Ascot. Uncle Mo colt has returned to the worktab.
PRINCESS PEGGY: Scat Daddy filly is back working after unplaced turf try at Royal Ascot, nominated to Schuylerville. Impressive first-out winner at Belmont in late May.
SCHIANTI: Cruised to a three-length decision at in career bow, leading wire-to-wire at Monmouth in early June. Distorted Humor nominated to Schuylerville.
SHANGROYAL: Shanghai Bobby colt displayed high speed and held on to defeat a nice group of rivals second-time out at Belmont in July.
Dale Romans
Dale Romans sent out a trio of first-out maiden winners late in the Churchill Downs meet and has nominated all three colts to the Sanford.
DAK ATTACK: A son of Ghostzapper, $625,000 purchase drew off nicely late in front-running score.
FREE DROP BILLY: By Union Rags, he rallied to win going away by three lengths.
HOLLYWOOD STAR: $550,000 son of Malibu Moon overcame a troubled start to prevail.
Kenny McPeek
Kenny McPeek sent out a nice pair of stakes winners on Churchill Downs’ June 30 closing-day program.
SUNNY SKIES: First North American winner for Animal Kingdom, Debutante heroine has rolled to convincing wire-towire tallies in a pair of starts.
TEN CITY: By Run Away and Hide, savvy $12,000 purchase improved to 2-for-2 in Bashford Manor. September 4 Hopeful (G1) an option later in the meet.
Christophe Clement
BEST PERFORMANCE: First-out maiden scorer exits runner-up in Astoria, Broken Vow filly nominated to Schuylerville. Jeremiah Englehart
I STILL MISS YOU: New York-bred debut winner made seamless transition to open company in Astoria, scoring by 2 ¼ lengths. Majestic Warrior filly nominated to Schuylerville. Horacio DePaz
HE HATE ME: Algorithms colt Improved to 2-for-2 with 3 ¼-length Tremont win, waiting for his return to worktab.
Using All-Ways Data From BRIS To Handicap Saratoga
by Ed DeRosa
As a multi-race player, finding winners is the most important output of my handicapping process, and there’s no meeting where finding winners is at a premium more than Saratoga Race Course.
i.e. everyone wants to be right at Saratoga.
Unfortunately, being right can come at a price because Saratoga is one meeting where popular angles get hammered because the more casual players are only familiar with popular angles (like Speed Ratings, Prime Power, etc.).
Brisnet.com’s proprietary data in Ultimate Past Performances can help you find winners.
Going back to the 2007 season, which covers 3,907 races in my Brisnet.com ALLWAYS database, there have been 411 races with a horse with an edge of at least 10 in prime power, and 169 of those horses have won for a gaudy win percentage of 38.93%, but the ROI is just an OK -6% (beats the takeout, but hardly profitable, and really unlikely to be profitable because these horses are typically short priced. A best last-out Speed Rating by more than 10 points fares a little better in that the ROI is only -3% despite a fewer percentage of winners with 141 winners from 393 horses for a 35.88% strike rate.
However, when combining the two angles (a horse ranked on top of both Prime Power and last-out Speed by at least 10 points in each category), you get 73 winners from 162 horses for a win percentage of 45% and an ROI of a super impressive +16%.
Unfortunately, this angle only shows up about 1-2 times/ week at Saratoga, but it’s practically money in the bank when using Brisnet.com Ultimate Past Performances.
Here is how often the top-ranked horse in each of these Brisnet.com stat categories won their respective races in 2016 at Saratoga Race Course:
Category | Dirt Sprint | Dirt Route | Turf Sprint | All Races |
Speed | 24 | 30 | 24 | 26 |
Class | 28 | 26 | 16 | 24 |
Prime Power | 27 | 37 | 16 | 27 |
