Preakness Stakes Overview

by John Mucciolo

Leg two of the Triple Crown has been a mostly logical one since the turn of the century, with just five of the past 18 winners paying in excess of $9 to win. That trend will continue in 2018. In this year’s edition, the top-two finishers from the Kentucky Derby look to have a major edge on their foes.

Good Magic is as honest as they come and will look to turn the tables on unbeaten Derby star Justify. The champion juvenile of 2017 was a bit flat in his seasonal debut when third in the Fountain of Youth (G2), but he came back to take the Blue Grass (G2) in advance of his very good showing at Churchill Downs two weeks ago.

The Chad Brown trainee still has to make up a few lengths on Justify, but he continues to train well and any misstep from the odds-on favorite will benefit the colt as he tries to become a second-generation Preakness winner. His sire, Curlin, won a thrilling edition of the Preakness in 2007.

Justify is a legitimate favorite and has superstar written all over him. Unblemished son of Scat Daddy attended a fast early pace in the Derby and never looked like a loser on the day, even when Good Magic came up to him in the stretch. The Bob Baffert pupil is a massive colt with speed and athleticism, and all reports indicate that he exited his historic win in fine fashion.

Since we think this will turn into a virtual match-race in the stretch on Saturday, the race will be for third.
Tenfold was a late bloomer like Justify, in that he made his first lifetime run in February. Steve Asmussen trainee won his first pair before finishing a sneaky-good fifth in the competitive Arkansas Derby (G1), and his training has been forward ever since. The colt is bred to run all day and we expect improvement in just his fourth career outing.

Lone Sailor is the kind of horse who could make a late run for a minor award at a nice price. Tom Amoss trainee was training rapidly in the days and weeks leading up to the Derby, and he found considerable trouble when eighth in the Bluegrass State. The sophomore will be running on late with an exotics chance.

However you play it, this Derby is worth savoring.
