Springboard Mile Stakes Contenders

#1 FIDGET (8-1): Cox trainee made a major leap forward on his move to the dirt when posting a fine allowance victory at Indiana last time out. The dark bay son of More Than Ready stayed on well after showing speed in that tally, and he draws well on the rail with Marcelino Pedroza in the silks. I expect him to earn a minor award.

#2 MY BUDDY MEL (20-1): Tonalist gelding rallied to be second in the Clever Trevor S. on the course last time out. This Danny Pish pupil will have to get faster, as well as prove he is capable of handling two turns, to be a contender in this spot. Jermaine Bridgmohan will be up.

#3 GETTYSBURG ADDRESS (6-1): Brad Cox charge made the pace before tiring to fourth in the Street Sense S. (G3) in his second career try leading up to this. This son of Constitution has flashed speed in both lifetime runs to date, which includes a smart debut victory, and the bay surely has to be considered a contender with Flavien Prat in the silks.

#4 MAGIC GRANT (8-1): $300,000 son of Good Magic made a huge move forward in his second lifetime appearance while removing blinkers when he rallied from well back to win in going-away fashion on the oval. This Eddie Milligan charge seems to be the type to handle the move to a route, and he shows some steady morning drills in advance of this, as well. Richard Eramia has the assignment.

#5 GLENGARRY (7-2): Top pick comes in with an unblemished mark from a trio of impressive sprint tallies and will run long for the initial time. The $150,000 son of Maximus Mischief proved his class with open foes with a professional score at Keeneland last time out and has trained well in the interim for Doug Anderson. This Iowa-bred gray will be forcing the pace from the break with Luis Saez in the controls.

#6 RAGING TORRENT (3-1): Doug O’Neill trainee has faced a few of the better juveniles in training out west and will remove the blinkers for his local debut. The Maximus Mischief colt flashed potential leading up to this and will be a major factor if he can settle with the equipment change. Regular pilot Antonio Fresu coming in to ride is a major positive.

#7 RHINO RUNNER (20-1): Cairo Prince youngster showed little in a dash with blinkers on at first asking, but the gray moved up dramatically when stretching out and removing the hood in his 5 1/4-length romp on the course in his second assignment. The April foal is bred to run long on his dam’s side, and he will be fit and ready following a handful of morning drills on the surface in advance of his stakes bow. Stewart Elliot has the call.

#8 OTTO THE CONQUEROR (5-2): $450,000 son of Street Sense comes off of a powerful allowance win at Churchill Downs when easily topping Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) victor Honor Marie by open lengths. The Steve Asmussen pupil is a length shy of being unbeaten from three races and looms as the one to beat with Tyler Gaffalione retaining the ride.

#9 THIRD STREET (20-1): Yoshida gelding comes in off of a sprint score and now tries to go long from the outside post. The Cajun-bred is a question mark at both the level and the trip, and others seem more likely in the tilt with Jose Alvarez taking the reins.
