Three carryovers, three singles at Arlington, Belmont, and Delaware
Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson digs into a busy Saturday of racing, highlighting horses to single in a trio of enticing non-jackpot carryovers across the country.
Belmont Park, Race 6: $54,192 Pick 6 carryover
Post time: 3:34 p.m. ET
Number of entries: 65 (10.8 per race)
Number of possible outcomes: 1,327,104
Best single: Race 9, Belmont Derby (G1): #2 Bolshoi Ballet (7-5)
The beaten favorite in England’s historic Epsom Derby (G1) exited the race with a cut on his right hind leg. He’s since recovered and should excel while cutting back to 1 1/4 miles, the distance over which he won Ireland’s Ballysax S. (G3) and Derby Trial S. (G3) during the spring. Bolshoi Ballet has tactical speed and will be tough to beat for internationally renowned trainer Aidan O’Brien, who won the 2016 Belmont Derby with Deauville.
Delaware Park, Race 3: $26,710 Pick 5 carryover
Post time: 2:15 p.m. ET
Number of entries: 49 (9.8 per race)
Number of possible outcomes: 77,616
Best single: Race 4, Dashing Beauty S.: #6 Chub Wagon (4-5)
Seven starts, seven victories. Chub Wagon has been unstoppable, winning all of her runs to date by an average margin of nearly seven lengths. True, she had to work a bit harder than usual to win last month’s Shine Again S. by a neck over #5 Hello Beautiful (5-1), who is back for another try. But Chub Wagon is a bit more versatile than her key rival, and since Hello Beautiful seems destined to hook up with #2 Euphoric (8-1) in a battle for early supremacy, Chub Wagon can sit a perfect trip and keep her unbeaten record intact.
Arlington Park, Race 1: $10,606 Pick 8 carryover
Post time: 3:25 p.m. ET
Number of entries: 57 (7.1 per race)
Number of possible outcomes: 6,453,888
Best single: Race 5, Allowance: #1 Silver Quarters (2-1)
The consistent gray gelding Silver Quarters looks tough to beat in this 1 1/16-mile turf allowance for Illinois-breds. The son of multiple Grade 1 winner General Quarters hasn’t missed the exacta in four starts running long, including a runner-up effort as the favorite over this class level at Arlington last month. Trainer Steve Manley wins at a a 30% rate with horses beaten as the favorite in their previous start, and jockey Christopher Emigh strikes at a 21% clip on turf, stamping Silver Quarters as a formidable presence.
Good luck!
