Data and Information for Handicapping Australian Racing

The world’s richest turf race, The Everest at Randwick Racecourse in Australia, is rapidly approaching.

With a purse of $14 million, the October 19 race is expected to attract a high-quality field of sprinters to dash for supremacy over 1,200 meters.

Interested in following the action and placing some wagers, but not sure how to begin? Never fear! TwinSpires has you covered with a variety of free handicapping products to help you decipher the mysteries of Australian racing.

Just head over to the handicapping section, select “Australia A/B/C (AUS)" from the track menu, and check out these three easy-to-access resources to aid your handicapping:

Australian Past Performances

The Australian past performances produced by Sky Racing World should be easily decipherable by North American bettors. For each horse, critical information is prominently outlined—name, age, sex, pedigree, weight assignment, program number, post position number, owner, trainer, jockey, trainer and jockey stats, lifetime record, career earnings, etc.

Below this standard introductory information, the racing form for each horse is displayed with traditional running lines (a maximum of ten) featuring the date, track, course condition, class level, and distance of each race they’ve contested. Fractional times, speed ratings, points of call, and margins of victory/defeat are also included, followed by the horse’s jockey assignment, post position number, weight assignment, and final odds. The top three finishers round out the running line for each race.

Lastly, a comment is included for each horse, designed to quickly distill the past performances into key takeaways to guide your handicapping.

Race Analysis Card

If you want to quickly identify the key contenders in any given race, the Race Analysis Card is a useful tool.

Using a single page of easy-to-read data for each track, Sky Racing World ranks the contenders in every race using 12 common categories of interest:

  • Frequent Winners (which horses like to win?)
  • Big Earners (which horses have won the most money?)
  • Speed Ratings (which horses have run the fastest?)
  • Today’s Conditions (which horses are best under current race conditions?)
  • Leading Jockeys (which horses have the best jockeys aboard?)
  • Best at Course (which horses are proven at this track?)
  • Best at Distance (which horses relish the distance?)
  • Leading Trainers (which horses are conditioned by top trainers?)
  • Fitness Patterns (which horses are ready for a peak effort?)
  • Best this Class (which horses have proven themselves at this level of competition?)
  • Mudlarks (which horses will handle off going?)
  • Ranking Totals (which horses scored best in the previous 11 categories?)

If there’s a specific handicapping angle you want to emphasize, the Race Analysis Card can quickly point you toward the most suitable horses to play.

Power Rankings Sheet

For more refined handicapping tips, check out the Power Rankings Sheet produced by Sky Racing World. In general, this is a great source for keeping track of all the action in Australia—every race on the simulcast schedule will be listed in chronological order, complete with post times in ET, CT, and PT plus a list of all available wagers.

But beyond providing a quick snapshot of every race and wager on the agenda, the Power Rankings Sheet also ranks the horses in every race from top to bottom using a “Power Rank” number determined by an algorithm analyzing a dozen different data points. The resulting numbers can give a feel for how evenly-matched a given race might be. If the best horse boasts a Power Rank number of 239 and the second-best horse has only a 101, you’re looking at a heavy favorite compared to a race where the top three horses have Power Rank numbers of 200, 200, and 190.

With these tools at your fingertips, you’ll be an expert on Australia racing before you know it!
