Three singles for Santa Anita's $411,484 Rainbow Pick 6 mandatory payout

Looking for a carryover to chase on Sunday? Look no further than the $411,484 Rainbow Pick 6 jackpot at Santa Anita, which is slated for a mandatory dispersal.

The 20-cent wager spans Races 4-9, a sequence containing just 39 entries and 67,200 possible outcomes after early scratches.

This presents an interesting betting opportunity. Three of the races contain standout favorites I’m willing to single at short prices. The remaining three races contain five, seven, and eight entries, which means we can hit the “ALL” button in these legs and still spend just $56—and that’s before race-day scratches.

Admittedly, it’s an unusual strategy. But it might be worth pursuing on this mandatory payout day. If our three singles win as expected, we can cross our fingers and hope for upsets in the other three legs.

Here are the three horses we’ll plan to build our tickets around:

Race 4: $50,000 Maiden Claiming (six furlongs, 5:41 p.m. ET)

#5 Supersonic Flyer (2-5) owns the three best Brisnet Speed ratings in the field and was beaten just half a length over this class level last month. Supersonic Flyer looms as the lone speed in this compact field and figures to lead all the way under hot apprentice jockey Jessica Pyfer.

Race 5: $50,000 Maiden Claiming (one mile on turf, 6:15 p.m. ET)

#1 Cinnte Winnte (9-5) finished fourth and sixth in her first two starts over this course and distance, beaten about four lengths each time while facing maiden special weight company. Take note, she was compromised by a slow early/fast place last time out, when she came home the last quarter in just under 23 2/5.

Trainer Patrick Gallagher wins at a 31% rate with horses transitioning from maiden special weight to maiden claiming company, and high-percentage turf jockey Umberto Rispoli is taking the mount. Cinnte Winnte looms as another logical single.

Race 7: Desert Code S. (six furlongs on turf, 7:12 p.m. ET)

There’s a fair amount of speed in this grass dash for three-year-olds, but according to track bias stats from Brisnet, only 21% of Santa Anita’s six-furlong turf sprints are won in gate-to-wire fashion. The average winner actually rallies from 2-3 lengths off the early tempo.

This bodes well for the chances of #1 Whatmakessammyrun (8-5). The former East Coast campaigner thrived in an allowance race over this course and distance last month, charging from fourth place to win by 2 1/4 lengths with a field-best 97 Brisnet Speed rating.

Santa Anita’s leading jockey Flavien Prat retains the mount, so we’ll look for Whatmakessammyrun to post another impressive victory.
