Three-year-old pacing colts highlight Monday card at Harrington
Monday evening Harrington Raceway hosted the opening round of Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund elimination action for three-year-old pacing colts and at least a handful of them delivered performances that would suggest they will be contenders in the $100,000 DSBF final on the July 28 Governor's Day program at the Delaware half-mile oval.
In the first of three DSBF opening round divisions, John's Dream (Ross Wolfenden) easily lived up to his role as the 1-5 favorite when he gained command in a 29.1 opener, got a breather by the half in 58.2 and drew clear from Double Miles (Jim Morand) to score n 1:55.3. A Dream Away ridgling owned and trained by Chuck Perry, Jr., John's Dream notched his second win in seven starts this year and now sports a solid 7-5-1 slate and $156,500 bankroll from 15 career outings.
John's Dream won last year's $100,000 DSBF final for freshman pacing colts at Dover then won one elim and finished second in the initial final at Dover for this group in April. He had faced older foes in his three prior outings at Harrington before returning to face sophomore rivals on Monday where he quickly regained his winning ways. He will definitely be a contender in the final.
Then two races later on the card, Power To Perform (Tony Morgan) lived up to his role as the tepid 7-5 favorite in the second DSBF elim when he gained command soon after the start, got a breather by the half in 58.4 then edged clear from Hail To The Master (Art Stafford, Jr.) and All Artist (Jeff Fout) to score in 1:55.3. A three-year-old Artzina colt trained by Kyle Moore, Power To Perform has won two straight and two of seven this year and four times in 19 lifetime tries.
Hail To The Master raced well first over to gain the place and is gradually regaining the form that enabled him to win five of nine starts last year and earn over $74,000. All Artist benefited from a pocket trip but could not secure the place spot and remains winless in six tries this year while finishing second twice and third three times. The top three finishers were all bred by Winbak Farm of Chesapeake City, Maryland.
Then several races later on the card, another Winbak product served notice that he will certainly be a major player throughout the elims and on Governor's Day as well.
Next Success (Morand), who recorded 7-1 upset when taking the first $100,000 DSBF final at Dover, gained command in a 27.4 opener, rebuffed an early challenge from Casino Bags Carlo then outlasted the pocket-sitting JW Renegade (John MacKinnon) to score by nearly a length in 1:53.1. It was the sixth win in 12 starts this year for the Veeza gelding trained by Les Givens for owners Henry Faragalli, III, Nanticoke Racing and Bay Pond Racing.
JW Renegade raced very well in defeat for his trainer-driver and for an instant appeared to heading by the leader in the lane. The Pacific Renegade colt has yet to win in seven starts this year and only sports one win from 13 career tries, but he has clearly become a different horse since being treated with Lasix on June 2. Casino Bags Carlo finished a nondescript third after his aborted early brush bid, while Spincredible took fourth for owner-trainer-breeder and blacksmith Virginia "Leigh" Louthan.
While the three-year-olds in the trio of DSBF eliminations took center stage, there were also a handful of impressive efforts delivered in the overnight races on the card.
