San Felipe Stakes Contenders

#1 SCATIFY (6-1): John Sadler pupil was a smart debut winner at Los Alamitos prior to checking in third behind Nysos in the Robert B. Lewis S. (G3) last time out. The son of Justify is bred to handle the increase in distance in this spot, but he will have to improve to challenge late for the upset. The chestnut colt will have Hector Berrios in the irons.

#2 WINE ME UP (8-1): First of the Bob Baffert trio has performed well while facing some of the top horses in his generation, and the son of Vino Rosso also looks like the one to catch on this day. The $300,000 juvenile purchase gamely held second in the Lewis most recently, and he figures to receive a more advantageous voyage on Sunday. Juan Hernandez retains the ride.

#3 NYSOS (1-5): $550,000 son of Nyquist has devastated a trio of fields to begin his career for Baffert and looks especially imposing in this endeavor. The Baoma color bearer is fast early and possesses a devastating turn of foot, and he has won by a combined 26 1/4 lengths from his three runs to date. The impressive colt will be impossible to upend if he runs his best race under Flavien Prat.

#4 MC VAY (20-1): John Shirreffs maiden was fourth in the Lewis and needs a major move forward on Sunday to be in the mix late. The $1.25 million Constitution colt will make one run from the back of the pack and could earn a minor award if the pace collapses with Antonio Fresu in the stirrups.

#5 IMAGINATION (6-1): Improving colt is the third from the Baffert brigade and is getting good at the right time of the year. The expensive son of Into Mischief was a fine second to a really nice prospect in a recent allowance tilt and makes some sense to be closest to the favorite late with improvement off of that outing. The bay has good tactical speed and will track from second early with Frankie Dettori in the silks.
