A pair of Grade 3 events are on the Pacific Classic (G1) undercard during a blockbuster day of racing at Del Mar on Saturday.
Green Flash
Turf sprint at 5 furlongs for the boys attracted nine in a well-matched field. Blaine Wright’s #3 Baja Sur (5-1) has run two winning races in defeat on the turf leading up to Saturday, and I will tab the Washington-bred for a breakthrough on this occasion. Four-time stakes hero will be making his third start since January, and the versatile son of Smiling Tiger showed an affinity for the course last time out.
Grade 2 winner #1 Sparky Ville (5-2), dual stakes-placed #6 Thanks Mr. Edison (15-1), and two-time stakes star #8 Mikes Tiznow (9-2) are the horses I will use with the top pick.
Wagers
- $20 Win #3: Baja Sur ($20)
- $3 Exacta Key Box: 3 with 1,6,8 ($18)
Torrey Pines
Fillies will travel a mile on the main surface with seven 3-year-olds signed on. I loved the debut win by #2 Secret Keeper (7-2) at Santa Anita in May, and she followed up that score with a fine allowance victory on the course going 6 1/2 furlongs against a few of today’s foes.
Trained by Clifford Sise, the Into Mischief homebred gives the impression of a filly who will move forward with the added ground in the Torrey Pines. Abel Cedillo, who is loaded with numerous live mounts on the card, will be in the controls.
I will use #7 Merneith (5-1) underneath in the vertical exotics. One of two from the Baffert barn, the $600,000 American Pharoah filly goes turf-to-dirt and figures to receive a perfect trip pressing the pace from the start under victor Espinoza.
Wagers
$20 Win: #2 Secret Keeper ($20)
$2 Trifecta: 2 with 7 with all ($10)
$2 Trifecta: 2 with all with 7 ($10)
