History of Horse Racing at Emerald Downs
Originally the site of Longacres Racetrack, Emerald Downs opened in 1996 and runs a spring/summer schedule of live Thoroughbred racing with a Quarter Horse stakes event held on Labor Day weekend. Under the shadow of Mount Rainier in Auburn, the track's signature race is the Longacres Mile: a Handicap Division race originally founded in 1935 to fill a void Longacres founder Joe Gottstein felt was missig on the stakes calendar.
Emerald Downs' Racing Surface
With no turf course, the main racetrack is a 1 mile oval with a surface comprised of geo-textile fabric, course sand, and washed rock. Given the commonly wet climate of the Seattle area, the infield was designed to be a storm drain for the property, including the parking lots, racing surface, even the rooftops.
