History of Fonner Park Racing
Fonner Park has been home to Thoroughbred Racing in Nebraska since 1954. Though the Thoroughbred racing scene took a large hit after the closing of Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha in 1995, tracks such as Fonner Park have helped keep horse racing alive in Nebraska. Centrally located in Grand Island, Fonner Park hosts the state’s richest horse race, the $75,000 Bosselman Pump & Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes, and the facility hosts multiple events for the community during the racing season.
