History of Hastings Horse Racing
Founded in 1892 on a 15 acre plot at the bottom of Hastings Park (formerly East Park), the race track at Hastings now occupies over 45 acres just four kilometers outside of downtown Vancouver with a great view of the North Shore Mountains and Burrard Inlet. During World War II, horse races from the nearby Brighouse and Lansdown tracks were moved to Hastings to accommodate gas rationing and (rumor has it) that old cars from the PNE Demolition Derby were used in the 1965 renovation of the race track. In 2012, the race track gained international recognition in the horse racing community when jockey Mario Gutierrez (who began his career at Hastings) earned victories at the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, and the Preakness Stakes.
