History of Lone Star Park Horse Races
Taking its first wagers in 1996 and opening to live racing in 1997, Lone Star Park began with one of the most successful inaugural seasons of any track in America: from Isitingood beating Spiritbound and the great Skip Away in the first Texas Mile to Gary Stevens besting Chris McCarron in the National All-Star Jockey Championship. After just one season, the Texas Mile proved such a great race that it was granted Grade 3 status by the North American Graded Stakes Committee.
Lone Star Park was famous for the Lone Star Million, a day of stakes races that annually attracted the best runners from around the country. Bobby Frankel - the first Hall of Fame trainer to saddle a runner at Lone Star - also trained the winner of the first race from the track to be televised on a national network when El Gran Papa won the Dallas Turf Cup. The Lone Star Park race track was also the site of the 2004 Breeders' Cup, with 101 of the world's best horses for eight championship races and over $14 million in purse monies.
Also known for quality Quarter Horse racing, Lone Star Park has been home to the MBNA American Challenge Championships numerous times.
