Trying to beat Lady Speightspeare in the 2022 Seaway Stakes
Ten fillies and mares will dash seven-eighths on the Woodbine all-weather strip in Saturday’s C$150,000 Seaway S. (G3). Multiple Grade 2 heroine #9 Lady Speightspeare (2-1) is the deserving morning-line choice for conditioner Roger Attfield, as she has been sharp in her pair of recent outings since coming off the layoff. Also the chestnut is also 2-for-2 on the course. But she faces some very talented runners that will offer much more value on Saturday, and it seems like a decent time to take a shot against the classy lass.
Mark Casse’s #5 Souper Sensational (3-1) has gone close in two graded turf sprints this campaign and could peak in her third try of 2022. By Curlin, the four-year-old is perfect from a pair of outings on the surface and has shown the versatility to run from on or off the pace. Kentucky-bred chestnut, who brought a hefty $725,000 as a yearling, has arguably never been better and will have money pilot Patrick Husbands up.
#8 Dreaming of Drew (5-1), runner-up to the favorite in the Trillium S. (G3) last time out, is no slouch and always runs well on the surface, given her 7-4-2-1 local line. Conditioned by Barbara Minshall, the Speightster four-year-old has very good early presence and might thrive on the cutback in distance. The chestnut draws inside of the morning-line choice and will get the jump on her turning for home beneath Kaz Kimura.
The wildcard in the cast is #6 The Grass is Blue (12-1) for conditioner Graham Motion. By Broken Vow, the four-year-old didn’t fire on the drift most recently, but she could be any kind while making her synthetic debut. The chestnut is training forwardly on the synthetic, and I never discount horses from this shedrow in general. Manny Franco riding adds to the appeal of the exotics contender.
