Tuesday’s Best Bets and Quick Picks: Canada Stakes win play

July 16th, 2024

Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares best bets and quick picks for Tuesday, July 16 at Horseshoe Indianapolis and Assiniboia Downs, including a win bet in the Canada S.

Best Bets and Quick Picks

Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 1: Maiden Special Weight (five furlongs on dirt, 2:10 p.m. ET)

Godolphin homebred #3 Winter Waves (5-2) has been training like he means business at Turfway Park. He's clocked half a mile in :48 3/5 or faster on five occasions, including a couple of bullet exercises in :47 3/5 and :46 4/5. The latter move came from the starting gate.

On July 5, trainer Eoin Harty sent out Godolphin homebred First Resort to dominate his debut at Ellis Park off a series of sharp half-mile workouts at Turfway. Winter Waves appears poised to do the same at Horseshoe Indianapolis, so a large win bet is in order.

Selections

  • #3 Winter Waves (5-2)
  • #1 Seven Anns (12-1)
  • #8 Don't Miss Out (9-2)

Wagers

  • $30 to win on #3 Winter Waves

Assiniboia Downs: Race 2: Maiden Special Weight (five furlongs on dirt, 9:00 p.m. ET)

#2 Red Road Runner (2-1) looks ready to shine on debut for trainer Michael Nault, who wins at a lofty 35% rate with first-time starters. Red Road Runner has posted a couple of bullet workouts at Assiniboia Downs, including half a mile in :50 3/5, and he has red-hot jockey Prayven Badrie (a 29% winner at Assiniboia this meet) named to ride.

Let's bet Red Road Runner to win and key him over fellow first-time starters #1 Mr. Splash (5-2) and #6 Tapologist (3-1) in the exacta.

Selections

  • #2 Red Road Runner (2-1)
  • #1 Mr. Splash (5-2)
  • #6 Tapologist (3-1)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #2 Red Road Runner
  • $5 Exacta: 2 with 1,6 ($10)
    Total: $30

Asssiniboia Downs: Race 7: Canada S. (7 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 11:05 p.m. ET)

#3 Spitten Kitten (2-1) is 5-for-8 lifetime at Assiniboia Downs. Last summer, she dominated the 7 1/2-furlong Jack Hardy S. over this track by 10 1/4 lengths, and she recently returned to her winning ways with a 1 1/4-length triumph in the six-furlong La Verendrye S.

In the La Verendrye, Spitten Kitten defeated five of the nine rivals she'll face in the Canada. Stretching back out over 7 1/2 furlongs should suit Spitten Kitten just fine, so let's bet her to win and call it a day.

Selections

  • #3 Spitten Kitten (3-1)
  • #2 Big Stretch (8-1)
  • #7 Melisandre (4-1)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #3 Spitten Kitten

Good luck!
