January 16th, 2024

Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares best bets and quick picks for Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Doomben (AUS) and Funabashi (JPN), including a 22-1 longshot.

Today’s special offers from TwinSpires include:

  • Trifecta Tuesday: Receive a 15% boost on your winning trifecta wagers (up to $25 per day) every Tuesday in January.
  • 10x Points on Harness Racing: Earn 10x reward points on all harness racing wagers (excluding show bets) every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during the month of January.

Best Bets and Quick Picks

Doomben (Aus): Race 1 (1,100 meters, 10:38 p.m. ET)

#4 Tiger Tie (13-1) is a son of the multiple Group 1-winning turf sprinter Harry Angel. The unraced colt won an 800-meter barrier trial at Doomben last month and is eligible to outrun expectations while debuting under jockey Fenlon Tahlia, whose last 50 rides have yielded a 16% win rate.

Since his morning line odds are enticing, we’ll keep things simple with a win bet on Tiger Tie.

Selections

  • #4 Tiger Tie (13-1)
  • #6 Lady Bossa Nova (3-1)
  • #3 Mishani Reactor (5-2)

Wagers

  • $15 to win on #4 Tiger Tie

Doomben (Aus): Race 2: (1,200 meters, 11:13 p.m. ET)

#1 Boom Court (11-2) has cracked the trifecta in three of his last four starts, all turf sprints over distances from 1,200 meters to 1,300 meters. The four-year-old gelding looks like a good fit for Wednesday’s dash and retains the services of red-hot jockey Ryan Wiggins, who has won at a 32% rate across his last 50 rides.

A win bet is in order.

Selections

  • #1 Boom Court (11-2)
  • #2 Belvedere Boys (13-2)
  • #3 Alakai Swamp (11-1)

Wagers

  • $15 to win on #1 Boom Court

Funabashi (JPN): Race 1: (1,200 meters, 12:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday)

#5 Aydin Ace (4-5) is one of only two proven winners in this field of three-year-olds. He got the best of a 1,000-meter contest at Morioka two starts back and followed up with a fine try in a 1,200-meter dash at Funabashi, finishing third while running his final 600 meters (about three furlongs) in a respectable :39.6.

But don’t count the filly #4 Castle Reve (22-1) out of the mix at a big price. Two starts back, she finished fifth in a 1,200-meter dash at Funabashi, a contest in which she ran the final 600 meters in :39.0 to record a final time of 1:16.8. Comparing different times across different days can be risky business, but when Aydin Ace finished third at Funabashi his final time was nearly two seconds slower—1:18.6.

Let’s place a win bet on Castle Reve and then play her in the quinella with Aydin Ace.

Selections

  • #4 Castle Reve (22-1)
  • #5 Aydin Ace (4-5)
  • #7 Stand Up (4-1)

Wagers

  • $12 to win on #4 Castle Reve
  • $3 Quinella: 4 with 5
    Total: $15

Good luck!
