TwinSpires Harness Players’ Horse Of The Year Leads Long List Of ‘Profit Ponies’ For 2017

Each December the TwinSpires harness-racing department studies the 12-month archives of suggested contenders posted in the exclusive weekly harness blog. From that review, we categorize all of the winners that have paid at least two digits (4-1 and up) in the order of win prices, high to low (while including their place and show prices and the track at which they won). We add a separate list for our winners of specific stakes we featured through the 52 weeks, also at 4-1 and up.

There were many more winners posted during the year that paid 7-2 and lower, but for the sake of space and a braggart’s love for success, we present only two-digit winners. Anyone wishing to see the entire list should make a request on Twitter @FrankCotolo. I will email the entire cast of winners to anyone requesting it.

First and foremost, we announce the TwinSpires Harness Players’ Horse of the Year. Each year the horse earning the title comes from either our features list or the horses-to-watch list (H2W) and is the highest paying winner from all our posts of the year.

Players’ Best Payer

The TwinSpires Harness Players’ Horse of the Year for 2017 is Mars Man.

Based on the biggest win mutual for a TwinSpires harness blog selection in 2017, Mars Man won by $74.00 in the win-prince category. On Feb. 18 at the Meadows, Mars Man won and paid $56.50-1. Across the board, his totals were $115.00, $29.80, $8.40. He was listed in that day’s H2W.

Mars Man was a five-year-old son of Lis Mara, out of the Artsplace mare Bohemian Dancer. He was bred and leased at the time by Robert Key and driven to victory Dan Rawlings. Mars Man is still racing and is currently trained by Michael Hall.

Owner/breeder Key is the same man whose American Winner won the Hambletonian in 1993. That colt was just one of many successful and moderate standardbreds Key has owned over a few decades.
