Two solid-looking singles in Saturday's Late Pick 4 at Gulfstream

December 16th, 2017

Saturday's Late Pick 4 at Gulfstream includes a trio of graded stakes plus a two-year-old maiden on the turf. Here's how I'll be playing it.

Race 8 -- My Charmer (G3) -- Grade 2 winner #5 ON LEAVE (7-5) is a solid single given her form against better throughout the year. Third in the Goldikova (G2) on the Breeders' Cup undercard last time when falling too far behind, her only "sub-par" race this year wasn't much of one as she finished just over three lengths behind Lady Eli in a tough renewal of the Ballston Spa (G2).

Race 9 -- Harlan's Holiday (G3) -- #3 DESTIN (5-2) is the class of the field, but #1 RICHARD THE GREAT (10-1) could be a sleeper for trainer Stanley Gold. His first race around two turns was fair enough as he finished a distant second to #2 MR. JORDAN (4-1) in the Sunshine Millions Preview at Gulfstream Park West, but I can see the roles reversing here as Richard the Great is four-for-nine over this track, while Mr. Jordan is zero-for-eight. #7 FEAR THE COWBOY (7-2) won the Skip Away (G3) here on Florida Derby Day and is an obvious threat.

Race 10 -- Tropical Turf (G3) -- #4 ALL INCLUDED (7-2) fared poorly in his latest at Monmouth Park in May, but is probably in tip-top shape for his return to action here for a barn unsurprisingly on fire. Along in time to win the Appleton (G3) two back and was not far off winning the last two editions of the Gulfstream Park Turf (G1). Keying him here.

Race 11 -- With the scratch of morning line favorite Boru, we'll lean on two previous starters and two first-timers. #2 FORGOTTEN COAST (8-1) missed in a photo three back and then endured trouble at Keeneland and an off-the-turf scenario back at Churchill last time. #6 ARMCHAIR JOCKEY (15-1) was ineffective on dirt in his initial start but is bred to like the grass more. #7 PROMPT (6-1) is a three-quarter brother to two-time Pan American (G2) winner Newsdad, while #9 HYNDFORD (7-2) has the pedigree and connections to fire early.

The $1 ticket: 5 with 1,3,7 with 4 with 2,6,7,9 = $12.

And don't forget to check out my thoughts on the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1) from San Isidro in Argentina, which you can wager on as Gulfstream Race #12.

Good luck!
