Two-year-olds highlight Dover Downs and Rosecroft Raceway cards
Thursday evening many of the sport's top two-year-olds of both gaits and genders were on display at Dover Downs in Delaware and this Saturday and Sunday evening a bevy of local stars will compete in the various Maryland Sire Stakes events for the same groups.
Thursday evening's card at Dover was highlighted by four lucrative Matron Stakes for two-year-olds of both gaits and genders and several of them performed superbly.
In the first event the $204,000 Matron Stakes for two-year-old colt trotters, Wolfgang (Yannick Gingras) benefited from a pocket trip behind stablemate Samo Different Day (Jimmy Takter) to score by a head as the 6-5 second choice in 1:55.3. The son of My MVP edged favored Samo Different Day but gave Takter a one-two finish in the lucrative event.
Several races later on the card, Plunge Blue Chip (Ake Svandstedt) regained her winning ways while leading throughout the capture the $173,000 Matron Stakes for two-year-old filly trotters. Trained and driven by Svandstedt of Resolve and Sebastian K fame, Plunge Blue Chip prevailed as the 6-5 favorite in 1:55.4.
Several races later on the card, Youaremycandygirl (Gingras) easily lived up to her role as the 1-20 favorite to capture the $200,000 Matron Stakes for two-year-old filly pacers. A winner of two straight since failing to earn a berth in the Breeders Crown final at Hoosier Park, Youaremycandygirl prevailed in 1:52.1 and looks destined to be champion juvenile filly pacer for trainer Ron Burke, whose freshmen finished first, second and fourth in the Matron.
Then several races later on the card, Springsteen (Simon Allard) benefited from a second over journey and rolled home in the lane to a five-length score in 1:51.1 in the $211,000 Matron Stakes for two-year-old colt pacers. Trained by Rene Allard, Springsteen gave his backers and connections plenty to sing proudly about with his belated stretch kick.
This coming Saturday and Sunday evenings, Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland will host the first round of Maryland Sire Stakes eliminations for two-year-olds of both gaits and genders with many of the participants eyeing the $50,000 finals on November 26.
In the MDSS opener for two-year-old filly trotters, Gaagaa Gone (Corey Callahan) will seek to regain her winning ways after suffering her first setback from seven starts in the previous MDSS final for this group, while Jas Going Away (Allan Davis) is looking to prove that her triumph as a maiden in that event was no fluke.
In the first MDSS split for two-year-old pacing colts, I Run This Show looms the one to beat already sporting a 2-3-1 slate from seven starts, while Bo Breeze brings a solid 3-4-1 slate from 12 outings. In the second split for 2yoft, Iron Mine Krystal owns a solid 4-2-2 slate from eight outings and will look to upend Four Deuces and TV Sensation.
Then in the second MDSS elim for freshman pacing colts, Allie's Finale, hero of the previous final here in 1:53, will go for his sixth win in nine starts this year for trainer Steve LeBlanc against Lloyd's All In, Toms Tyranasaurous and Redline Rusty. Look for all three of those colts to earn a berth in the final.
Then on Sunday evening in the early non-betting events, look for Chucky De Vie (Ross Wolfenden) and What That Is (Brian Burton), hero of the previous MDSS final here in 1:56, to settle the issue in the lane. Then in the second split, Judge Bob (Jonathan Roberts) and Uncle Ike (Betsy Brown) will look to get an early start to securing a berth in the final.
Then in the most contentious non-betting MDSS elim of the group, HS Shauna, no driver listed yet since regular pilot Roger Plante, Jr. is still recovering from injuries during a spill at Dover Downs last week, gets the rail against Cool Toy (Jason Green), Miss Choptank (Victor Kirby) and Tell Me The Truth (Art Stafford, Jr.). That group brings a combined total of 14 wins from 43 starts and Cool Toy owns the best mark of 1:53.2 although HS Shauna prevailed in the previous final in 1:54.
