Value Plays for the 2022 Ellis Park Debutante
An overflow field of two-year-old fillies will jaunt seven furlongs on the Ellis Park main strip in Sunday’s $125,000 Ellis Park Debutante. I don’t have a lot of confidence in the morning-line choices in the field and will spread with some longshots with my wagers.
#1 Shoplifter (12-1) is my top pick from the rail for conditioner Eddie Kenneally. By Super Saver, the filly missed by a neck at first asking prior to registering a comfortable maiden victory at Churchill Downs last time out. The Kentucky-bred showed obvious improvement in her second run, and she has the early speed to avoid being shuffled behind early in the huge field, too. April foal shows a trio of solid morning drills in the interim, and she is my most appealing value play at her price with Bejarano riding.
#3 Zapple (8-1) won an off-the-turf race over a sloppy surface here on debut and could be any kind going forward. The homebred daughter of Ghostzapper drew off like a good thing in her victory, and while I am not sure the caliber of horse that she defeated, it is worth noting that the dark bay went off favored in that dash. Gerardo Corrales will guide the interesting lass once again.
#6 C C Cruise Control (12-1) wasn’t all that impressive in her dirt debut prior to drawing away on the green second out for McPeek, but she deserves another chance on the main surface. Cross Traffic homebred displayed a nice turn of foot most recently, and the dark bay could be a menacing figure late with a late run beneath Corey Lanerie.
If #13 Pachuca (15-1) draws into the field as the first also-eligible on the list, then I will include the intriguing Gulfstream invader. Ghostzapper homebred rallied from well back to win in going-away fashion in her initial outing, and any improvement will make her worth including for sure at a big number with Talamo in the silks.
