Best Bets and Quick Picks

Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 1: Maiden Special Weight (one mile on dirt, 2:10 p.m. ET)

Since 2023, trainer Brad Cox has compiled a phenomenal 8-for-15 (53%) record debuting juveniles in dirt routes at Horseshoe Indianapolis. That includes a 4-for-7 (57%) tally this year.

This bodes well for #4 Take a Look (5-1) and #6 Chapel Street (4-1), a pair of unraced Cox trainees. Take a Look is a daughter of five-time leading North American sire Into Mischief out of Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Abel Tasman, while Chapel Street is a daughter of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Street Sense out of Royal Delta (G2) heroine Penwith.

Of the pair, we slightly prefer Chapel Street, who is shipping in off a long series of workouts at Churchill Downs. But we’ll use both fillies to start double and Pick 3 wagers.

Selections

  • #6 Chapel Street (4-1)
  • #4 Take a Look (5-1)
  • #5 Runnin N Gunnin (2-1)

Wagers

  • $10 Double: 6 with 2
  • $7 Double: 4 with 2
  • $5 Pick 3: 6 with 2 with 3
  • $3 Pick 3: 4 with 2 with 3
    Total: $25

Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 2: Allowance (5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 2:41 p.m. ET)

#2 Don’t Miss Out (5-2) finished behind #1 Hot Middles (7-2) when third in the six-furlong Back Home Again S. at Horseshoe Indianapolis earlier this month. But the margin was only 1 1/4 lengths, and Don’t Miss Out arguably ran the better race after chasing hot fractions of :21.84 and :44.85.

If Don’t Miss Out gets an easier setup while dropping into the allowance ranks, she can turn the tables on Hot Middles. Let’s bet her to win and single her in double and Pick 3 wagers.

Selections

  • #2 Don’t Miss Out (5-2)
  • #1 Hot Middles (7-2)
  • #6 Catatonic (7-5)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #2 Don’t Miss Out
  • $10 Double: 2 with 3
    Total: $30

Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 3: $5,000 Claiming (5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 3:12 p.m. ET)

#3 D’oro’s Wish (8-5) has been freshened since spring, when he ran second in back-to-back $25,000 claiming sprints at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Those efforts earned sharp Brisnet Speed ratings of 78 and 84, the best recent numbers belonging to any of the horses in Tuesday’s field.

Dropping down to the $5,000 level should make D’oro’s Wish tough to beat. A couple of bullet half-mile workouts at Horseshoe Indianapolis this month suggest the layoff isn’t a concern, so let’s bet D’oro’s Wish to win and single him to conclude our double and Pick 3 wagers.

Selections

  • #3 D’oro’s Wish (8-5)
  • #1 Oro Azteca (8-1)
  • #5 Devils Gotta Go (7-2)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #3 D’oro’s Wish

Carryover Watch

Finger Lakes: Race 3: $2,731 Pick 6 carryover (1:58 p.m. ET)

The ever-elusive $1 Pick 6 at Finger Lakes has gone unsolved on each of the last three racing days, triggering a triple carryover worth $2,731 into Tuesday’s card.

Bettors looking for a single to build tickets around should check out race 3, the opening leg of the Pick 6. It’s an $11,000 claimer for horses who have never won two races. The six-furlong dirt dash has drawn only half a dozen entries, the smallest field in the Pick 6 sequence. All else being equal, bettors could select any horse at random and have nearly a 17% chance of picking the winner.

We can do better than random by favoring #2 Free Folk (9-5). The three-year-old gelding won a six-furlong maiden special weight during the spring at Finger Lakes, earning a 71 Brisnet Speed rating. Then, after a series of defeats against allowance competition, Free Folk dropped in class for a six-furlong $11,000 claimer for non-winners of two races on Oct. 15 at Finger Lakes and finished second, earning a career-best 72 Brisnet Speed rating.

None of Free Folk’s Tuesday rivals have earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 71 in their last three starts apiece, nor a number higher than 68 in their last two starts apiece, so a repeat of Free Folk’s last effort should make him tough to beat. Actually, in that $11,000 claimer on Oct. 15, Free Folk defeated by clear margins three of the five rivals he’ll face on Tuesday.

Throw in the fact trainer Chris Englehart has won with 22% of his starters at Finger Lakes this meet, and all signs suggest Free Folk is sitting on a winning run. We’ll count on Free Folk to secure his second career victory and single him to start the Pick 6.

Good luck!
