The Sunland Park Derby, a Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier, is the sporting highlight of Sunday’s card at Sunland Park.
The betting highlight is arguably the all-stakes 50-cent Pick 5 featuring a $1,698 carryover.
Let’s take a race-by-race look at the Pick 5 sequence and assemble a ticket for under $50:
Race 5: Harry Henson H. (one mile on dirt)
#3 Corrina Corrina (9-5) has won 18 of 35 starts and boasts a 7-for-12 record at Sunland Park. The stretch-running mare regularly wins stakes and is a logical contender on Sunday, though more tactical rivals like #5 Love Tank (5-2) and #4 Don’t Bring Crazy (7-2) own similar Brisnet Speed ratings and must be used as well.

Race 6: Red Hedeman Mile S. (one mile on dirt)
#2 Holy Hank (2-1) has crossed the wire first in four of his five starts, including three straight stakes. But he’s never run farther than six furlongs. Runaway maiden winner #8 Mojica (6-1) and stakes winner #4 B Bold Charlie (5-1) are logical alternatives if Holy Hank misfires in his route debut.
Race 7: Sunland Park Oaks (one mile on dirt)
#4 Maysam (9-5) dominated her debut at Santa Anita for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Sunland Park Oaks a record eight times. She’s clearly the fastest entrant from a Brisnet Speed rating perspective, so we’ll make Maysam a Pick 5 single.
Race 8: Peppers Pride S. (one mile on dirt)
This is an evenly matched field, and since none of the entrants have run farther than 6 1/2 furlongs, you can make a case of some sort for anyone to win. We’ll hit the “ALL” button and try to catch a longshot winner.
Race 9: Sunland Park Derby (1 1/16 miles on dirt)
After finishing second in the American Pharoah (G1), fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), and second in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), #4 Getaway Car (9-5) is a standout favorite in the Sunland Park Derby. We’ll single him to conclude the Pick 5.
- 50-cent Pick 5: 3,4,5 with 2,4,8 with 4 with ALL with 4 ($45)
Good luck!
