Race 4: 7 Today Matters (7-2)

This $30,000 maiden claiming sprint didn’t come up very tough on paper, so Today Matters offers appeal. The son of Carpe Diem has posted competitive Brisnet Speed ratings while facing tougher company and is switching from turf to dirt, a successful strategy 30% of the time for trainer Lorenzo Ruiz. Throw in the fact Today Matters is running back for the second time off a layoff (a 28% winning move for Ruiz), and the bay gelding looms as a logical threat at a nice price.

Race 7: #4 Jibber Jabber (7-2)

#7 Velvet (5-2) owns the best speed figures in this one-mile turf maiden special weight, but the daughter of American Pharoah has never run farther than six furlongs. If the longer distance trips her up, Jibber Jabber is a logical alternative. Formerly campaigned in Europe, the Patrick Gallagher trainee finished third over this class level and distance on Feb. 28, the first start of her North American campaign. Gallagher wins at a 39% rate with horses running on Lasix for the second time, and skilled grass jockey Umberto Rispoli is slated to ride, so there are plenty of reasons to like Jibber Jabber.

Race 8: #4 Growth Engine (3-1)

Trainer John Sadler has enjoyed strong success in recent years with horses formerly based out East, nabbing Grade 1 wins with Combatant, Higher Power, and Gift Box. Could Growth Engine develop into Sadler’s next star? The five-year-old son of Tapit has never contested a stakes race, but he’s technically the fastest runner in Saturday’s Santana Mile, having posted a pair of triple-digit Brisnet Speed ratings when based on the East Coast with trainer Chad Brown.

Growth Engine has been freshened since a Sept. 19 allowance win at Monmouth Park and enters off a sharp series of workouts, suggesting he can fire a big shot in his local debut. Jockey Flavien Prat takes the mount, a noteworthy development since Prat and Sadler have gone 4-for-5 together over the last 60 days.
