West Village charged past the tiring leaders in deep stretch to capture Saturday’s third race on the Kentucky Derby program, posting a 1 ¾-length decision after rallying from last to first in the one-mile turf maiden special weight.

Owned by Gary and Mary West, the son of Lemon Drop Kid was making his third career start and first on grass. Rafael Bejarano was up for conditioner Wayne Catalano.

A $120,000 Keeneland September yearling, West Village paid $10 to win as the 4-1 third choice. The three-year-old colt finished up in 1:36 4/5 on the firm turf.

West Village finished third in his first two starts versus maiden special weight foes on the main track at Oaklawn Park. Out of an El Prado mare, he’s bred on both sides for grass and appears to have plenty of potential moving forward.
