Winx goes for Cox Plate three-peat tonight
The superstar set records in the last two runnings, breaking the track mark in 2015 and winning by an unprecedented eight lengths in 2016. Winx comes off a romp in the Turnbull (G1), her 21st consecutive victory. Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by Hugh Bowman, the Street Cry mare will be a prohibitively short price as she breaks from post 6 in the Cox Plate.
Only one other horse has ever won the Cox Plate three times, Kingston Town (1980-82). Winx has just eight foes to dismiss in order to emulate him, and she towers above the field in her quest for number 22 in a row.
Here’s the rundown of the opposition:
Godolphin’s Folkswood brings solid formlines from Dubai and Europe, and adapted immediately to Australia to win the Cranbourne Cup.
French-bred Gailo Chop returned to his best in his front-running Caulfield (G1) score, but was well beaten by Winx here two years ago.
Humidor, expected to put up a better effort when third to Winx in the Turnbull, cuts back in trip off a fifth in the Caulfield Cup (G1).
Royal Symphony steps up in distance from a late-running fourth in the Caulfield Guineas (G1) and gets in with a feathery 109 pounds as a three-year-old.
Happy Clapper, a routine victim of Winx, was upset at odds-on in the Craven Plate (G3) and is still looking for his first win at around this distance.
Seaburge, last year’s Caulfield Guineas and Mackinnon (G1) runner-up, exits a fifth in the Toorak (G1).
Hardham owns course form as the winner of the Alister Clark (G2) back in March, but was only 10th in the Caulfield Cup.
European shipper Kaspersky, a Group 2-level miler, was 16th of 18 in his Australian debut in the Toorak.
