Haskell Stakes Contenders

#1 DORNOCH (5-2): Belmont Stakes (G1) winner has been a high-level performer in both years of his racing and has a big shot from an advantageous rail post slot. The Danny Gargan trainee has the pace to be sent and put on the lead over a surface that is often kind to his running style, and the Good Magic colt was a stakes second in his lone local try at Monmouth, too. Luis Saez will be in the stirrups.

#2 JASPER’S PRIDE (30-1): Outsider shows two wins and a third from three outings in 2024, all coming in sprint events. The New Jersey-bred from the Chuck Spina barn takes a massive class rise and would be a monumental upset against this group.

#3 TUSCAN SKY (9-2): Todd Pletcher trainee was very impressive in dominating the local Pegasus S. on the strip in his latest venture, which was also his first outing with blinkers on. The talented colt failed to fire in his lone prior graded outing, but he can’t be overlooked while forwardly placed throughout in this spot. Javier Castellano will pilot the son of Vino Rosso, and I’ll tab him to earn his second stakes win.

#4 TIMBERLAKE (8-1): Grade 1 winner bagged the Rebel S. (G2) to kick off the season, prior to recording a fourth-place result in the deep Arkansas Derby (G1). The accomplished Into Mischief colt was given a long break in preparation for this endeavor, and his best performance will give him a big chance late with Flavien Prat taking the reins.

#5 FIERCENESS (5-2): Champion son of City of Light has been something of an enigma to this stage of his development, but there is no doubting the talent of the two-time Grade 1 victor. The Repole homebred didn’t show much at Churchill in the Kentucky Derby (G1) in his most recent effort, but he has posted numerous works in advance of Saturday and should be ready to run. His best makes him a prime win threat.

#6 JUST STEP ON IT (30-1): Parx invader from the Lou Linder shedrow led at every call in posting a nice allowance victory most recently, but he has yet to give any indication that he will be up for a task like this. The son of Accelerate would be a huge surprise.

https://x.com/TwinSpires/status/1761535377179849075#7 MINDFRAME (9-5): Pletcher pupil dominated his initial pair of races prior to running an impressive second in the Belmont S. (G1) in just his third career assignment. The son of Constitution has both tactical speed and a strong closing kick, and the nine-furlong distance seems ideal for him, as well. The $600,000 Maryland-bred will be formidable with another step forward under regular pilot Irad Ortiz, Jr.

#8 SEA STREAK (20-1): Talented local hopeful was outrun in the Pegasus in his latest showing, but the son of Sea Wizard looked good in a fine Long Branch S. score on the oval two prior. The Eddie Owens trainee will need a lifetime best to topple this crew, but he has appeal for the exotics at a big number despite drawing widest of all.
