About Hollywood Park Racetrack
If it’s good enough for stadiums and arenas, it’s good enough for horse racing. Hollywood Park became the first racetrack in the United States to sign a sponsorship deal for naming rights, officially becoming Betfair Hollywood Park in 2012. Just another in a long line of firsts for one of California’s most venerated racetracks.
Hollywood Park opened its doors in 1938 as the brainchild of Jack and Harry Warner, two of the four Warner Brothers. This Arthur Froehlich-designed park started with a bang when Seabiscuit won the inaugural Hollywood Gold Cup, which continues to be the track’s signature event (10 furlongs, dirt, 3-year-olds and up) at a purse of $750,000. Among other past winners: Noor, Citation, Affirmed, Cigar, and Skip Away.
This being Hollywood, it’s no surprise that Hollywood Park gave American thoroughbred racing its first film patrol in 1941, recording every race for review by stewards the following day. Historian became the first horse to ship by air for a specific race when he competed in the 1946 Gold Cup, finishing third. Citation became the first horse to top $1 million in prize money by winning the 1951 Gold Cup.
The current facility is run by the Bay Meadows Land Company, which is looking for an opportunity to develop the site into a racino. The racecourse features a nine-furlong Cushion Track oval, installed in 2006 and the first in California to switch from dirt. The turf oval is one mile long and has hosted the Turf Festival since 1991, drawing some of the best horses from America and Europe every November.
