One Dreamer
One Dreamer was foaled in 1988 in Florida, and she was bred and raced by Glen Hill Farm. One Dreamer was unraced as a 2-year-old, and made just one start her sophomore season and finished fourth.
After breaking her maiden in March 1992, One Dreamer won four times and finished in the money in seven of eight starts as a 4-year-old, running mostly in allowances races. Over the next two years, she again raced eight times each year and won four times both as a 5-year-old and 6-year-old.
One Dreamer’s first graded stakes race came in November, 1993 at age 5 in the Churchill Downs Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2). She finished 2nd to close out a solid campaign in which she finished in the money in 7-of-8 starts again. One Dreamer returned to Churchill Downs the following May and won the Louisville Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2), going wire-to-wire as the co-favorite. She continued to run well, finishing in the money in four more starts and winning two races leading up to the 1994 Breeders’ Cup.
The Breeders’ Cup Distaff would be the final race of One Dreamer’s career. And what a way to finish. Sent off as the longest shot in a field of nine at 47-1, One Dreamer made history at Churchill Downs. She went to the front and jockey Gary Stevens never had to look back, going wire-to-wire in victory by a neck to pay $96.20 for the win.
