Paseana

Paseana (ARG) was an Argentine-bred mare foaled in 1987. Paseana was bred by Haras Vacacion and won five races in Argentina before being purchased by Sidney and Jenny Craig to be campaigned in America. As a 4-year-old in 1991, Paseana became a two-time Eclipse Award winner under the care of trainer Ron McAnally.

Starting in November, 1991, Paseana won 7-straight graded stakes races, all of them as the heavy favorite with jockey Chris McCarron aboard. That run included five Grade 1s: the Santa Maria Handicap, Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap, Apple Blossom Handicap, Milady Handicap and Vanity Handicap. A 5th place finish in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar snapped the streak, and then a 2nd place finish in the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland led her into the 1992 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Gulfstream Park, where she was as $200,000 supplemental entry.

From the far outside post (14) as the second-wagering choice, Paseana won the most important race of her career by 4 lengths. With a record of 7-1-0 from nine starts and earnings of $1,518,290, Paseana won the 1992 Eclipse Award for Champion Older Mare.

As a 6-year-old, Paseana repeated in the Apple Blossom and Milady and added another Grade 1 win in the Spinster Stakes. She was runner up in four Grade 1 races that year including in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff where she came up a nose short to the favorite Hollywood Wildcat. Paseana’s campaign was still considered the best of her class and she once again won the Eclipse for Champion Older Mare.

In 1994 as a 7-year-old, Paseana raced three times and won the Santa Margarita Handicap for the second time and added a Grade 2 victory in the Chula Vista Handicap. She won the Grade 2 Hawthorne Handicap the following year at age 8 before being retired in the summer of 1995 with a career record of 19-10-2 from 36 starts.

Paseana won a total of 14 graded stakes in America, including 10 Grade 1s. She completed her career with earnings or more than $3.1 million.

Paseana died in 2006 at Haras San Ignacio de Loyola in Argentina following hemorrhaging due to a ruptured abdominal blood vessel.
