About Louisiana Downs

The 350 acre race facility opened October 30, 1974. Those early decades in the 1970s and 1980s drew record attendance, including 15,000 patrons opening day, and record national handle.

3-year-old Thoroughbreds in North America meet one of the premiere races on the Harrah's Louisiana Downs race calendar, the Super Derby.

The Super Derby was first planned to run at 1 1/4 miles in 1980. Running in the fall, the Super Derby would have an impact on year-end honors for sophomore contenders. Comprised of a $500,000 purse, at the time the richest ever for 3-year-olds. Temperance Hill would win the inaugural race following his win in the Belmont Stakes.

Quarter Horse racing is also run at Louisiana Downs each January through March.
